- President Donald Trump nominated Kari Lake to serve as the next US ambassador to Jamaica
- The former news anchor and Arizona politician now awaits Senate confirmation
- Lake currently serves as a senior adviser within the Trump administration’s media agency
President Donald Trump has officially nominated former television news anchor and Arizona politician Kari Lake to become the next United States ambassador to Jamaica, according to a White House announcement released Monday.

The nomination now heads to the US Senate, where lawmakers will review Lake’s background and hold a confirmation vote before she can formally assume the diplomatic role. If approved, Lake would replace former ambassador Nick Perry, whose term ended in January 2025.
Kari Lake Rose To National Attention Through Politics
Before entering politics, Lake spent more than two decades working as a television news anchor in broadcast journalism. She later transitioned into politics as a Republican candidate in Arizona, where her campaigns for statewide office quickly elevated her national profile.
Lake became one of the more recognizable political figures aligned with Trump during recent election cycles, frequently appearing in national media and campaign events.
Her nomination to Jamaica represents another high-profile administration appointment as Trump continues shaping his diplomatic team during his second non-consecutive term in office.

The Embassy Has Been Operating Without A Confirmed Ambassador
Since Perry’s departure earlier this year, the US Embassy in Kingston has been led by Chargé d’Affaires Scott Renner, a longtime career diplomat within the State Department. Renner has served in the department since 1997 and stepped into the leadership role while the embassy awaited a permanent ambassadorial appointment.
If confirmed, Lake would become the primary US diplomatic representative to Jamaica during a period where regional trade, migration, tourism, and security cooperation remain important parts of Caribbean-US relations.
Lake Currently Holds A Media-Focused Administration Role
At the moment, Lake serves as a senior adviser at the United States Agency for Global Media, the federal organization overseeing civilian international broadcasting operations. The agency manages networks such as Voice of America and focuses heavily on delivering news coverage to regions with limited media freedom.
The appointment would mark Lake’s first formal diplomatic position if confirmed by the Senate.
