Arthur Hayes is returning to the crypto operator’s chair. The BitMEX co-founder announced on Aug. 18 that he will become CEO of Flop Labs, a new project focused on building financial infrastructure for the emerging AI agent economy.
Flop Labs is developing the Flop Network alongside its native $FLOP token, which the project describes as “food for your AI agent.” The idea is to create a currency layer that autonomous software can use without requiring human approval for every transaction.

$FLOP Targets the AI Agent Economy
The Flop Network is designed around a future where AI agents independently purchase computing resources, negotiate services and settle payments with other agents.
$FLOP is expected to serve as the network’s native currency and unit of account for those transactions. However, Flop Labs has yet to release detailed technical specifications or complete tokenomics.
A large-scale $FLOP airdrop is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026, while the network’s genesis block and mainnet launch are targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
Hayes Promises a Fair Crypto Launch
Hayes says $FLOP will have a “100% fair launch,” with no presale rounds or venture capital token allocations.
The structure could distinguish Flop Labs from crypto projects that allocate substantial portions of their supply to early investors before public participation begins.

For Hayes, the project also represents a significant return to hands-on crypto development after years spent primarily investing through Maelstrom and publishing market commentary.
The key test will come with the planned airdrop and mainnet launch. Hayes can bring substantial attention to Flop Labs, but its longer-term success will ultimately depend on whether autonomous AI agents actually need and adopt a dedicated crypto payment network.
