Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, announced in a message to users that the messaging platform will begin sharing 50% of ad revenue starting in March 2023. Durov stated that Telegram’s broadcast channels generate 1 trillion views per month, but only 10% of those views are currently monetized through Telegram Ads.
50% of Ad Revenue to Be Shared With Channel Owners
According to Durov’s announcement, Telegram Ads will expand to nearly 100 new countries. Importantly, he revealed that channel owners will receive 50% of any revenue Telegram makes from displaying ads in their channels. This new ad revenue-sharing plan will provide an incentive for channel owners on Telegram.
Payouts to Be Made in Toncoin (TON) on TON Blockchain
In addition, Durov shared that all payouts for the ad revenue-sharing program will be made in Toncoin (TON) on the TON blockchain. He highlighted the fast and secure nature of TON for facilitating payments. Since the announcement, the price of TON has surged by 30% to around $2.78.
Telegram Ad Revenue Sharing Aims to Create a Virtuous Cycle
Durov noted that by paying out revenue in TON, it will create a virtuous cycle where users can either cash out their Toncoin or reinvest it. Overall, Telegram’s move to share ad revenue on its wildly popular messaging app provides an opportunity to monetize its massive reach. The decision also further integrates Telegram with TON and Toncoin.
