Puma, the popular international sportswear company, is expanding its involvement in Web3 technology by collaborating with NBA player LaMelo Ball and the NFT project Gutter Cat Gang. This collaboration introduces a one-of-a-kind sneaker release known as the “GutterMelo MB.03.”
The limited-edition sneakers will be available as NFT collectibles on the OpenSea marketplace beginning June 29 for $175. Later, from July 18 to August 20, NFT holders can exchange their digital collectibles for physical sneakers.
According to the website, the sneaker collection marks a “new era for hoops apparel and fashion.” Ball designed it as part of his MB fashion collaboration with Puma. In addition, each buyer who purchases the NFT sneakers will receive a physical pair they can show off in the real world.
The website further states that this collaboration goes beyond traditional boundaries by allowing basketball players to express their personalities both on and off the court. Furthermore, it aims to raise public awareness of web3 technology and digital collectibles.
Enthusiastic buyers can now express their interest in purchasing by signing up on the Premint allowlist platform. However, the website has already indicated an excess of demand, and not all buyers will be able to obtain sneakers from the collection.
Collectors who join the early access allowlist will pay $175 for the GutterMelo MB.03 sneakers, while those who join the early access waitlist will pay $195. The price will then rise to $215 on sale to the general public.
NFT-driven Releases
Ball, a talented and rising NBA player who was selected as the third overall pick in 2020 and currently plays point guard for the Charlotte Hornets, signed a lucrative multi-year endorsement deal with Puma in 2020 valued at $100 million.
The MB.03 sneaker is the third installment in his collaborative sneaker line with Puma, with more editions set to be released later this year.
Gutter Cat Gang, which debuted in June 2021, is an NFT profile picture (PFP) project that includes 3,000 cat-themed avatars. The Puma sneaker has a one-of-a-kind design with a vibrant heat map-like effect. It also has an image of the Gutter Cat Gang and the inscription “1-of-1” on the tongue. The names of the collaborators are also prominently displayed on the heel.
Furthermore, LeBron James, who has been named an all-star in each of his 19 NBA seasons to date, has dabbled in the world of NFTs. Observers noticed him wearing RTFKT sneakers in May, and the same company also gave him his own CloneX avatar.
Nike acquired RTFKT, a digital sneaker startup, in December 2021.
RTFKT helped to popularize the practice of exchanging digital NFTs for merchandise. Holders of the CloneX avatar can also “forge” physical items that mimic the clothing characteristics of their digital assets.
As NFTs gain popularity, the fashion industry has discovered a new path within this digital landscape. Specifically, streetwear and sneakers have emerged as digital fashion frontrunners. Nike, for example, made a big announcement in April when it launched its first digital sneaker collection on its Web3 platform, Swoosh.
