Ethereum Targets 2029 for Quantum Resistance – Here Is What Comes Next

  • The Ethereum Foundation has set a December 2029 target to make Ethereum resistant to quantum computing threats across transactions, validators and data storage.
  • The deadline comes ahead of a potential 2030 threat horizon, although current quantum computers are nowhere near powerful enough to break Ethereum’s cryptography today.
  • Ethereum’s 2027 Hegotá upgrade will not make the network quantum-resistant itself but is designed to keep a series of future post-quantum upgrades on schedule.

The Ethereum Foundation has given itself until December 2029 to prepare Ethereum for the potential threat posed by powerful quantum computers.

The target covers several critical parts of the network, including the cryptography used to authorize transactions, secure validators and protect Ethereum’s data.

The deadline is deliberately ahead of the Foundation’s 2030 quantum threat horizon. Some forecasts suggest computers capable of breaking widely used cryptographic systems could emerge around that time, although significant uncertainty remains and current quantum machines pose no immediate threat.

The Foundation plans to reassess the timeline with outside experts in January 2027 as quantum computing technology develops.

Hegotá Will Prepare Ethereum for Quantum Upgrades

Ethereum’s Hegotá upgrade, scheduled for 2027, will play an important role in preparing the network for its post-quantum transition.

However, Hegotá itself will not make Ethereum quantum-resistant.

Instead, the upgrade is intended to establish the technical foundations and development schedule needed for future post-quantum hard forks.

“Hegotá is not the PQ fork. It is the fork that decides whether the PQ forks happen on time,” the Ethereum Foundation said.

Those later forks would introduce the cryptographic changes necessary to protect Ethereum from quantum attacks.

Ethereum Could Replace Its Current Signature System

One of the biggest concerns involves secp256k1, the signature system Ethereum has relied on since launch.

When a wallet sends a transaction, its public key can become visible onchain. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically use that information to calculate the corresponding private key and authorize transactions without the owner’s permission.

Ethereum developers are working on proposals that would allow accounts to move away from secp256k1 as their primary authorization method.

Another proposal would begin retiring validator withdrawal credentials that still rely on the same cryptographic system.

Five Hard Forks Could Complete the Transition

The Ethereum Foundation currently expects five hard forks after Hegotá as it works toward the December 2029 deadline.

That schedule would require upgrades roughly every 7.2 months, with development on multiple forks overlapping rather than happening sequentially.

Planned milestones include leanSPHINCS, a hash-based signature system, post-quantum validator attestations and a public key registry.

Ethereum is also developing a fallback known as minimum viable post-quantum protection. The system is intended to keep Ethereum operating with reduced guarantees if a major quantum breakthrough happens before the complete transition is finished.

For Ethereum developers, the 2029 deadline now creates a fixed target against which other protocol improvements will be measured, making quantum resistance a central priority for the network’s upcoming development roadmap.
