The FBI Just Showed Up to a Bitcoin Conference and Actually Said Nice Things

  • FBI signals support for crypto developers while targeting criminal activity
  • Officials clarify distinction between Bitcoin technology and illegal use
  • Shift reflects broader pro-crypto posture under current administration

The FBI showing up at a Bitcoin conference and saying something positive wasn’t exactly on anyone’s radar this year, but here we are. At Bitcoin 2026 in Las Vegas, FBI Director Kash Patel and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche took the stage and made it clear, the agency isn’t looking to fight the technology anymore.

Instead, the focus is shifting toward working with the crypto community, which, honestly, feels like a pretty big change in tone.

A Clear Message to Builders

One of the most important takeaways from the panel was directed straight at developers. Blanche made it explicit, if you’re building software and not committing a crime yourself, you’re not the target of investigations or charges.

That kind of clarity has been missing for years, and it removes at least some of the uncertainty that’s been hanging over the builder side of crypto.

Separating Code From Crime

Patel reinforced that same idea, drawing a firm line between Bitcoin as a technology and the way it can be misused. The FBI’s role, he said, is to go after fraud, scams, and bad actors, not the infrastructure that enables digital assets to exist.

It’s a distinction that sounds obvious, but in practice, it hasn’t always been treated that way, which is why this shift stands out.

Enforcement Isn’t Going Away

At the same time, the message wasn’t all friendly. Both officials made it clear that illegal activity involving crypto will still be prosecuted aggressively, regardless of the medium.

The FBI has already been targeting international scam networks using digital assets, and that effort isn’t slowing down anytime soon. So while the tone is softer toward developers, enforcement remains firmly in place.

A Noticeable Shift in Direction

For an industry that spent years feeling under pressure from regulators and law enforcement, this moment feels different. The idea that agencies like the FBI are willing to engage directly, and even signal support, suggests a broader shift in how crypto is being viewed at the federal level.

Whether that approach holds over time is still uncertain, but for now, the message is clearer than it’s been in a while, build responsibly, and you’re not the one they’re coming after.
