SpaceX Unlocks 319M Shares – Here Is What Investors Should Watch

  • SpaceX is set to unlock roughly 319 million shares on August 20, the second major release following its June 2026 IPO.
  • The first unlock of up to 911.5 million shares on August 6 was absorbed without heavy selling, with SPCX actually gaining around 6%.
  • Elon Musk’s holdings remain locked until June 2027, removing one of the biggest potential sources of selling pressure for now.

SpaceX is moving ahead with the next stage of its post-IPO share unlock schedule, with roughly 319 million shares becoming eligible for trading on August 20. The release is considerably smaller than the first tranche and will provide another test of investor demand for SPCX shares.

First SpaceX Unlock Avoided Heavy Selling

SpaceX went public in June 2026, selling around 639 million Class A shares at $135 each and raising approximately $85.7 billion.

The first major unlock arrived on August 6, when up to 911.5 million shares became tradeable. Instead of triggering the sharp decline sometimes associated with IPO lockup expirations, SpaceX shares gained approximately 6% that day, with no significant wave of insider selling reported.

Another 319 Million Shares Enter the Market

The August 20 release adds another substantial block of potentially tradable shares to SpaceX‘s public float. However, its smaller size compared with the August 6 tranche could make the additional supply easier for the market to absorb.

SpaceX is using a staggered release structure rather than allowing billions of shares to unlock simultaneously. Approximately 4.9 billion shares are expected to become unlocked by the end of 2026, meaning investors still have several future tranches to watch.

Musk’s SpaceX Shares Remain Locked

One important source of potential selling pressure remains off the market. Elon Musk’s holdings are reportedly locked until June 2027, keeping the company’s largest shareholder from participating in the current unlocks.

For now, the August 20 tranche will offer another indication of whether demand for SpaceX shares remains strong as its public float expands. The larger test may arrive as additional shares unlock later this year, followed eventually by Musk’s June 2027 lockup expiration.
