  • Etherscan users face a phishing threat from malicious ads that could drain crypto wallets.
  • The scam extends beyond Etherscan to search engines and social media, raising concerns about ad filtering.
  • Blockchain security experts caution against engaging with suspicious ads to protect digital assets.

The Ethereum blockchain explorer Etherscan has become the focal point of a significant phishing scam, putting its users at the mercy of cybercriminals. Community members and blockchain security experts have raised the alarm, urging users to exercise extreme caution.

Unveiling the Scam

The issue came to light when a vigilant community member, McBiblets, flagged certain Etherscan advertisements as potential wallet drainers. These ads, when clicked, could redirect users to deceptive websites designed to siphon funds from unsuspecting victims’ crypto wallets. Further scrutiny revealed that these malicious ads were not confined to Etherscan but had permeated various search engines and social media platforms.

Broadening Concerns

The scam’s reach, extending to prominent search engines and social media, underscores a worrying trend of inadequate ad screening by aggregators. Platforms like Coinzilla and Persona, which supply ads to Etherscan, are under scrutiny for their filtering processes, or lack thereof. This loophole has facilitated the spread of the phishing campaign, endangering users across the web.

Community and Expert Warnings

The blockchain community, alongside security firms like SlowMist, has been vocal in warning users about the dangers of interacting with suspicious ads. The potential involvement of the notorious phishing group Angel Drainer in this campaign has been suggested, although definitive proof remains elusive.
