Finnish Scientists Develop Metaverse Tool for Enhanced Employee Oversight

  • Finnish researchers introduce a concept where digital avatars, or “Metahumans,” in the metaverse can mirror employees’ real-world states to improve management.
  • The proposed system, named “MetaStates,” allows for real-time monitoring of workers’ emotions, cognitive states, and productivity in a virtual environment.
  • This technology could revolutionize workplace management by enabling simulations for optimizing team strategies, safety measures, and overall performance.

Two researchers from Finland have brought forward an innovative idea that could change the way workplaces are managed. They suggest using virtual reality to create a work environment where bosses can see how their employees are feeling and doing, just like in a video game. This idea is detailed in a study titled “MetaStates: An Approach for Representing Human Workers Psychophysiological States in the Industrial Metaverse.”

Enabling bosses to see their team's productivity via the metaverse

Virtual Reality in the Workplace

The study comes from Tampere University, where the scientists explain how digital versions of people, known as digital twins, can be used in this virtual world to show important information about employees. These digital twins aren’t just simple copies; they’re designed to reflect the inner feelings and thoughts of the person they represent, like if someone is feeling stressed or tired. This is done through visual cues, such as a character appearing worn out or upset in the virtual world.

A New Era of Management

The idea is to make it easier for those in charge to understand and manage their teams better in a metaverse. For example, in a factory, instead of just walking around and checking on things or waiting for problems to be reported, a manager could use this virtual space to see how every employee is doing at any moment. This could help in making the workplace safer and more efficient because problems could be spotted and dealt with quickly. Also, this technology could be used to test out different ways of working to find the best one without any real-world risk.

The researchers believe that these digital twins and the virtual world they live in could be a big deal for how workplaces are run, making it easier to keep track of everything and everyone. This could lead to better ways of working together and getting things done.
