FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, has teamed up with web3 AI firm Altered State Machine to launch the open beta version of the AI-powered mobile soccer game, “World Cup AI League.” This innovative 4v4 soccer strategy game utilizes artificial intelligence for its characters, cosmetics, and gameplay elements. The game, now available on Android with an iOS release coming soon, is an expanded iteration of FIFA’s World Cup prediction game launched in November.
The Evolution of Soccer Gaming: Pixar-like Characters and AI-Driven Gameplay
The World Cup AI League introduces a fresh perspective in soccer gaming, moving away from featuring famous soccer stars like Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Instead, the game showcases cartoonish, brightly-colored characters resembling those from Pixar movies or the popular video game Fall Guys. These characters are controlled by AI, determining their strengths, weaknesses, and movements.
Players take on the role of both team coaches and owners in a format similar to fantasy football or other sports management games. The game offers maps inspired by international locales, including Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Yaoundé, and Seoul.
According to co-founder Aaron McDonald, altered State Machine’s mission is to “lead casual gamers into the world of AI gaming in the metaverse.” This collaboration with FIFA presents a unique opportunity for football fans worldwide to engage with their favorite sport in an entirely new way.
Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and In-Game Currency
Although AI League is a free-to-play game, an Altered State representative confirmed plans to launch an NFT marketplace shortly. When the marketplace is introduced, the game’s characters will be minted as NFTs, and all future characters will be represented as NFTs.
AI League currently offers an in-game currency for users to purchase cosmetic enhancements for their players. However, this currency is not a cryptocurrency, primarily due to Apple and Google restrictions surrounding crypto trading.
Balancing Web3 Technology with Traditional Gaming
The representative explained that the NFT deployment would come later because the company wants the user experience to feel frictionless, and it doesn’t want players to be overly focused on or distracted by the NFT elements. This strategy reflects a growing trend in the Web3 space, with developers launching games in a traditional “Web2” form without NFT or crypto elements before integrating them later.
FIFA is no stranger to the crypto world, having enlisted a crypto sponsor for the 2022 World Cup and launched an NFT platform. FIFA has also partnered with other Web3 game studios for World Cup-themed integrations.
As FIFA embarks on its post-EA journey, this innovative collaboration with Altered State Machine paves the way for an exciting era in mobile soccer gaming. By leveraging AI technology and embracing NFTs, the World Cup AI League offers soccer fans a unique and engaging way to interact with the sport they love. With the integration of Web3 and metaverse technology, this AI-powered football universe will surely capture the attention of casual and dedicated gamers, heralding a promising future for FIFA’s gaming ventures.
