A group of entrepreneurs in New Orleans is using NFTs to revitalize a historic event space on St. Charles Avenue. The Nieux Society is launching a pilot program during Mardi Gras where members of the public can purchase the Mardi Gras NFT and get access to the venue, including bars, bathrooms, and a temporary food vendor.
The idea is to use something as simple and relatable as access to a beer garden and a bathroom on the parade route at Mardi Gras to introduce the city to NFTs. The Nieux Society’s broader goal is to help New Orleans content creators learn about the opportunities that NFTs and other Web3 technologies will enable.
The Nieux Society: Connecting the digital and physical
To that end, they are already using The Nieux, which they began leasing in 2021, to hold workshops and monthly meetups called Crypto and Cocktails. Having a membership-based organization with a physical campus will help marry the digital, virtual marketplace with tangible creations and their creators.
“This is a way to test the waters,” said Williamson, founder of The Nieux Society. “In addition to having a home base for Mardi Gras, it will showcase the innovation happening in New Orleans. It will show people what activities we will have at the campus as we begin building it out.”
The Nieux Society has already attracted 504 founding members, and in March, Williamson is opening membership up to a broader audience with a goal of 5,000 total members. However, before that, he’s launching the Mardi Gras NFT, aimed at showcasing the former Eiffel Society building, which has been the site of several failed ventures in its 37-year history. The NieuxCo partners believe they can break the cycle.
The future of NFTs in community building
The Nieux will be a multipurpose gathering point for local artists, creative types, and anyone interested in blockchains, NFTs, or other quickly-developing technologies. The space will be open and airy, with bars, food vendors, and gathering spaces. Still, access will be gated, available only to those who join The Nieux Society, which will cost around $1600 or 1 ETH, the unit of cryptocurrency Ethereum uses to buy and sell NFTs.
The Nieux Society is leading the charge in utilizing NFTs to enhance community building and engagement. Using the technology during a special local event like Mardi Gras, they hope to introduce the city of New Orleans to the possibilities of NFTs and Web3 technologies. The Nieux Society is also using its physical campus, The Nieux, to hold workshops and monthly meetups called Crypto and Cocktails to educate further and connect community members. The society’s goal is to have a membership-based organization that marries the digital and physical worlds and showcases the innovation happening in New Orleans.
