- Yuga Labs sold the Moonbirds, Mythics, and Oddities IP to Orange Cap Games amid ongoing NFT market decline.
- Orange Cap Games plans to revive the IPs with new experiences and hinted at future on-chain developments.
- Yuga is now focusing solely on Bored Ape Yacht Club, Otherside, and an undisclosed project in the works.
For the second time this month, Yuga Labs has offloaded yet another NFT IP—this time handing over Moonbirds, Mythics, and Oddities to Orange Cap Games. Just weeks ago, they did the same with the iconic CryptoPunks, shipping it off to a digital art conservation nonprofit. Not to mention, Meebits got the boot back in February. It’s all part of a bigger pivot as the NFT space continues to reel from a year-long slump, with trading volumes reportedly down 95% since peak hype, according to DappRadar.
So what’s Yuga up to now? They’re doubling down on what still works—or at least what hasn’t completely fizzled out. In an update shared on X, co-founder Greg Solano made it clear: “We’re laser-focused on Apes, Otherside, and something special we’ve been cooking up.” Sounds like a playbook refresh, keeping their strongest assets and letting go of the rest.
Orange Cap Games Steps In
Enter Orange Cap Games. They’re kind of new to the scene, flying low on social media radar but clearly making big moves. In their announcement, the team said they’re all about reviving fan-favorite IPs with “carefully crafted experiences” aimed at both old fans and fresh faces. Alongside the Moonbirds news, they also revealed they’d previously built a physical and digital trading card game around Pudgy Penguins—which is kind of impressive given they didn’t even own the IP. Until now.
Solano chimed in with his endorsement, saying Orange Cap had created “an incredible trading card game” and that this acquisition puts Moonbirds in the hands of folks who’ll treat it as their core focus. “Moonbirds deserve a team whose whole world is the birds,” he said, adding that Orange Cap is just the crew to help it soar again.
On-Chain Hints and a Glimpse at the Future
Looking ahead, Orange Cap hinted that the next evolution of the Moonbirds IP could have on-chain elements—possibly landing on Yuga’s own Layer-2 ApeChain or sticking to a more traditional mainnet. Either way, it’s a signal that while Yuga’s moving on, they’re not shutting the door entirely on interoperability or future collabs.
With NFT interest still cooling and projects looking to regroup, these handoffs could be part of a broader cleanup—figuring out what still matters and what can be passed on. Whether Orange Cap breathes new life into Moonbirds or it flutters away quietly, one thing’s clear: the great NFT reshuffling isn’t done yet.
