  • US lawmakers propose the National AI Commission Act to establish a national commission dedicated to guiding AI policy, research, and innovation.
  • The act aims to drive comprehensive AI policies, prioritize research, and promote responsible AI adoption through education and workforce development.
  • The act addresses ethical concerns and privacy considerations and aims to strengthen US competitiveness in AI by fostering collaboration and strategic investments.

On Monday, a bipartisan group of US lawmakers introduced legislation to create a commission to investigate the country’s approach to artificial intelligence (AI). This is a significant step towards advancing artificial intelligence (AI) development and harnessing its potential across various sectors.

The bill‘s primary goal is to establish regulations in the AI industry. The act comes on the heels of consumer protection groups in the European Union (EU) urging regulators to look into the AI models that power popular chatbots.

Representatives Ted Lieu, Ken Buck, and Anna Eshoo introduced the bipartisan National AI Commission Act. The bill proposes the establishment of a national body to develop a comprehensive framework for AI regulation.

The act is intended to address the potential risks associated with AI technology, with Lieu highlighting the importance of preventing harm from unregulated AI. The commission will bring together experts, government officials, industry representatives, and labor stakeholders to accomplish this.

According to the lawmakers, their collaborative efforts will focus on providing recommendations for effective AI regulation.

The Center for AI and Digital Policy’s president, Merve Hickok, has expressed support for the National AI Commission. She described the proposal as timely and critical, as it would establish vital AI regulations and allow the public to participate in shaping the country’s AI strategy.

The center has previously expressed concern about the United States inability to address future AI challenges.

Hickok sees the proposal to form a commission as a positive step forward and applauds the lawmakers for taking the initiative.

This development follows repeated calls from numerous influential figures in the tech industry, including billionaire Elon Musk and others, to implement measures to slow the pace of AI advancement. Notably, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI creator ChatGPT, recently expressed his concerns about the urgent need to regulate the AI industry effectively.

Implications for the Future of Artificial Intelligence in the United States

The introduction of the National AI Commission Act represents a significant step forward in AI development and policy in the United States. The proposed national commission would be instrumental in guiding AI-related initiatives, encouraging responsible adoption, and positioning the country as a global leader in AI technology.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape various industries, the act aims to keep the United States at the forefront of AI innovation while addressing ethical, privacy, and competitiveness concerns.
