Strategy Sells $334M in MSTR Shares – Here Is Why It Didn’t Buy Bitcoin

  • Strategy sold approximately $333.7 million worth of MSTR shares between August 10 and August 16.
  • The company made no Bitcoin purchases or sales during the week, leaving its massive treasury unchanged at 840,447 BTC.
  • Proceeds were directed toward preferred stock dividends, STRC repurchases and Strategy’s growing U.S. dollar reserve.

Strategy raised approximately $333.7 million by selling 3.46 million MSTR shares last week, but notably, none of that capital went toward purchasing additional Bitcoin.

According to the company’s latest regulatory filing, Strategy neither bought nor sold BTC between August 10 and August 16. Its holdings therefore remained at 840,447 BTC, currently worth roughly $53.4 billion.

Strategy acquired those coins for a total cost of approximately $63.4 billion, including fees and expenses, at an average purchase price of $75,385 per Bitcoin. With BTC trading near $63,500, that leaves the company sitting on around $10 billion in unrealized losses.

Strategy Redirects $333.7 Million Away From Bitcoin

Instead of expanding its Bitcoin position, Strategy allocated the proceeds from its MSTR share sales across several financial priorities.

Approximately $52.4 million was directed toward dividends on STRC preferred stock, while another $132.2 million funded STRC repurchases under the company’s Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program.

The remaining $149.1 million was added to Strategy’s U.S. dollar reserve, increasing it to approximately $4.8 billion.

The allocation marks an interesting shift for a company that became famous for repeatedly tapping capital markets to accumulate more Bitcoin.

Strategy Keeps Its 840,447 BTC Treasury

Despite making no new purchases, Strategy remains comfortably the world’s largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holder.

Its 840,447 BTC represents roughly 4% of Bitcoin’s maximum 21 million supply. That enormous position also means changes in BTC prices can produce billions of dollars in unrealized gains or losses relatively quickly.

Executive Chairman Michael Saylor also skipped his usual Bitcoin tracker update over the weekend. His Sunday posts have historically preceded acquisition announcements, though they have become less predictable as Strategy’s capital allocation approach evolves.

Strategy’s Capital Plan Is Changing

Strategy’s newer Digital Credit Capital Framework gives the company considerably more flexibility beyond simply raising money and purchasing BTC.

The company has authorized programs covering preferred security repurchases, common stock buybacks and even potential Bitcoin sales under certain circumstances. Up to $5 billion in BTC could potentially be monetized to support reserves, dividends, interest payments and securities repurchases.

Meanwhile, MSTR has faced substantial pressure alongside Bitcoin’s broader downturn. Strategy shares remain nearly 80% below their previous peak, while Bitcoin treasury companies more broadly have experienced sharp contractions in their market premiums.

For now, Strategy isn’t selling its enormous Bitcoin position, but it isn’t adding to it either. The decision to direct $333.7 million toward liquidity, dividends and security repurchases instead shows that managing its broader capital structure has become an increasingly important part of the company’s strategy.
