  • Krafton, the company behind PUBG: Battlegrounds, is partnering with South Korean augmented reality firm Naver Z to launch a Web3 metaverse gaming platform called Migaloo, with a $36.8 million investment.
  • Migaloo aims to offer a unique gaming experience that encourages user creativity, featuring a “create-to-earn” system that allows users to create, buy, and sell in-game assets as NFTs.
  • Asian game companies, including Square Enix, Nexon, Razer, and WeMade, are increasingly venturing into the Web3 and NFT spaces, signaling a shift in the gaming industry.

Krafton, the South Korean game development company behind the massively popular battle royale game PUBG: Battlegrounds, has recently announced plans to launch a new Web3 metaverse gaming platform called Migaloo. Partnering with Naver Z, a South Korean augmented reality firm, the two companies are set to create a joint venture based in North America, investing $36.8 million into the development of Migaloo. This ambitious project aims to merge the world of gaming and NFTs with a “create-to-earn” system that allows users to create, buy, and sell in-game assets as NFTs.

A New Kind of Metaverse Experience

Unlike other metaverse platforms, Migaloo is being developed by an AAA game studio, offering a unique gaming experience that encourages user creativity and rewards content creators. While little is known about the platform’s specifics, Migaloo will resemble popular games like Roblox, with the added twist of integrating NFTs for in-game assets.

The partnership between Krafton and Naver Z combines the expertise of both companies with Krafton’s history in creating successful games and Naver Z’s experience in operating metaverse social networks. The joint venture aims to revolutionize how content creators are rewarded, offering them an incentive to create within the Migaloo metaverse.

Asian Game Companies Embrace Web3 and NFTs

The Migaloo project is part of a growing trend of Asian game companies venturing into the Web3 and NFT spaces. Japan-based Square Enix, a creator of the Final Fantasy series, has announced its own Web3 game called Symbiogenesis. Meanwhile, Nexon, a game studio with roots in Japan and South Korea, is developing MapleStory Universe in Web3.

Razer, a Singapore-based gaming hardware company, has also launched a Web3 incubator program, and South Korean firm WeMade is planning to release some of its biggest titles with Web3 integrations. These developments indicate a clear shift in the gaming industry as more traditional game developers and publishers explore the potential of NFTs and Web3 technology.

Krafton’s Ongoing Commitment to Web3 Initiatives

In addition to Migaloo, Krafton is no stranger to the world of Web3. In March 2022, the company announced a partnership with Solana Labs to develop games on the Solana network. Although there have been no public updates on the plans since the initial announcement, this collaboration highlights Krafton’s dedication to exploring the possibilities of Web3 technology in gaming.

The upcoming launch of Migaloo marks a significant milestone for the gaming industry as more companies begin to integrate NFTs and Web3 technology into their offerings. The joint venture between Krafton and Naver Z promises to deliver a unique metaverse experience that encourages user creativity and rewards content creators, potentially changing how we perceive gaming platforms. As we eagerly await the launch of Migaloo later this year, it’s clear that the future of gaming is looking brighter than ever, with the potential to transform the way we interact, create, and earn within these virtual worlds.
