What Prompted Biden’s Executive Order

Deputy White House Chief of staff Bruce Reed said Biden was “impressed and alarmed” after seeing AI-generated images of himself. He also learned about concerning voice cloning technology that can mimic anyone’s voice. Reed said watching Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning at Camp David made Biden even more worried about the potential downsides of AI.

In the film, Tom Cruise‘s character fights a villainous, sentient AI called the Entity. This AI hijacks a submarine and kills the entire crew. Reed said if Biden wasn’t already worried about AI, he saw “plenty more to worry about” in this film.

What’s in Biden’s Executive Order

According to the Associated Press, Biden was very interested in AI technology in the months leading up to the executive order. He met with scientists to learn about AI’s potential upsides and dangers.

The order’s action items will be carried out over the next 90-365 days. Items related to AI safety and security will be addressed first. The order aims to protect Americans from AI risks by developing standards, tools, and tests for AI systems. It also requires AI developers to share safety test results and other critical info with the government.

The order directs creating guidelines for labeling AI-generated content to protect against AI fraud. Overall, the White House says this is the most sweeping action yet to address AI risks.
