  • The ad suspensions could cost Twitter up to $75 million by the end of 2022. Musk lashed out at advertisers, telling them to “go f*** yourself”, but later apologized for engaging with the antisemitic tweet.

Netflix has resumed advertising on Twitter following a suspension in November 2022 amid backlash against Elon Musk for promoting an antisemitic post. Netflix had halted nearly $3 million in ads according to Twitter’s estimates.

Background on the Controversy

On November 15th, Musk endorsed a tweet by a verified account that promoted an antisemitic conspiracy theory. Musk agreed with the post, saying “You have said the actual truth.” This prompted multiple brands, including Disney, Paramount, Apple, Sony, and Lionsgate to suspend advertising on Twitter.

Twitter’s Response

On November 16th, Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino said discrimination “should stop across the board.” She said Twitter has been clear about efforts to combat antisemitism, stating “There’s no place for it anywhere in the world, it’s ugly and wrong.”

Musk’s Reaction

On November 17th, Musk called advertisers “the greatest oppressors of your right to free speech.” He proceeded to file a lawsuit against Media Matters on November 20th. During the Times Deal Book Summit on November 29th, Musk told advertisers who suspended ad buys to “go f*** yourself.” However, he also apologized, saying he shouldn’t have replied to the antisemitic post.

Netflix has now resumed advertising on Twitter, joining other brands that are returning to the platform after pausing in the wake of the controversy surrounding Musk and antisemitism.
