The giant Web3 wallet, MetaMask, has recently, on 2 November 2022, announced its partnership with HyperPlay, the famous blockchain games launcher. The two plan to introduce users to a new era where every desktop game will access a cryptocurrency wallet.
MetaMask tweeted on November 2nd, 2022 that:
“MetaMask and @HyperPlayGaming have been working together to bring MetaMask to every desktop game.HyperPlay will be a new web3-native game launcher aggregating the @EpicGames store and @GOGcom to inject MetaMask into every game launched through these stores.”
According to the announcement, HyperPlay will support Windows, Linux, Apple, and Seam Deck devices. All while permitting gamers to access wallets, NFTs, and tokens on any EVM chain. This will make it a giant platform that will overstep several boundaries in today’s market.
MetaMask further tweeted,
“With HyperPlay, players can carry their wallet, tokens, NFTs, and achievements into every game with Web3 capabilities.”
With this partnership, HyperPlay will manage a service similar to how Epic or Steam offers traditional gaming. A slight difference is that they will add another degree of Web3 spark into the community by allowing MetaMask to access all its games.
HyperPlay will offer its first-ever developer access on 16 November 2022, and it will fully launch its whole public beta in February.
The partnership promises more incredible things for their users and anyone willing to become part of the community in April.
MetaMask on Web3 Gaming
MetaMask has recently partnered with gaming developer Game7 to introduce HyperPlay, a Web3 traditional game launcher. The partnership’s purpose is to encourage developers to develop crypto-native games on HyperPlay.
Through this initiative, consumers of any Hyperplay game would carry in-game tokens, achievements, and NFTs in their MetaMask wallets to enable exchanges and connections between different titles.
A pseudonymous HyperPlay founder and Game7 main contributor, Jacobs.eth said,
“Players can take assets between games, use them in DeFi, and follow their friends’ wallets.” He also added that developers would gain from the latest game launcher.
HyperPlay allows anyone to study, use, issue, and change code and issue basic application programming interfaces (API) to ask for signatures and transactions, making it the best to make permissionless game economies.
Gaming as the Bridge to Web3?
Blockchain gaming has recently gained so much attention in Web3, getting roughly $750 million from venture capitalists in 2022 for the first nine months. According to DappRadar, above 50% of the money has been invested in cryptocurrency.
The global product lead at MetaMask, Taylor Mohan, informed BlockWorks that since 2022, gaming has been the most excited and used case on the wallet;
“With the pandemic, MetaMask has seen exponential growth in play-and-earn gaming, especially in the APAC [Asia-Pacific] region,” he said.
However, as proven by a recent study done by CodaLabs, gaming might still need to be the bridge to Web3 primarily because of the concern of crypto scams and Web3 gaming costs. CodaLabs revealed that several traditional gamers are not crypto or NFT fans.
The study rated traditional gamers’ feelings towards cryptocurrency and NFTs at an average of 4.4 out of 10. 15% of conventional gamers who have never gamed on Web3 showed interest in blockchain-related games.
