Epic Crossover: Historic Xbox Games Landing on Competing Consoles Soon

  • Microsoft is releasing four previously Xbox-exclusive games on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles as a limited “experiment” to expand franchises and attract new players. The games are believed to be Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves and Grounded.
  • Microsoft clarified this move does not represent an abandonment of hardware ambitions, with a new Xbox console still planned for 2028. The company’s Xbox Game Pass service will also remain exclusive to Xbox.
  • This shift indicates Microsoft is deprioritizing exclusives as a competitive advantage, instead focusing on expanding revenue opportunities and subscribers by bringing hits like Sea of Thieves to more platforms. But exclusives will likely retain importance for future Xbox hardware.

Microsoft has announced a surprising move that signals a major shift in its gaming strategy. The company will bring several previously Xbox-exclusive games to competing PlayStation and Nintendo consoles.

MICROSOFT CONFIRMS LIMITED CROSS-PLATFORM RELEASES

Xbox head Phil Spencer revealed on an official podcast that four Xbox games will be released on other consoles. He clarified that these four games are at least one year old, but did not name specific titles. Sources suggest the games are Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves and Grounded.

According to Spencer, Microsoft is using this limited cross-platform approach as an “experiment” to expand original franchises and attract new players. However, he said there’s no promise of additional Xbox releases outside of these four titles.

MICROSOFT NOT ABANDONING HARDWARE AMBITIONS

Despite this strategic shift, Microsoft is not abandoning its ambitions in the console hardware market. Last year’s leaks revealed the company is developing a new console tentatively planned for 2028.

XBOX GAME PASS WON’T EXPAND TO OTHER CONSOLES

Microsoft also clarified that its popular Xbox Game Pass subscription service will not expand to PlayStation or Nintendo platforms. However, Activision Blizzard games will start coming to Game Pass beginning with Diablo IV in March.

THE STRATEGY BEHIND MICROSOFT’S SURPRISE MOVE

This move indicates that Microsoft is deprioritizing console exclusives as a competitive advantage. By bringing hits like Sea of Thieves to new platforms, the company expands revenue opportunities and onboard more players to Xbox game franchises.

While surprising on the surface, cross-platform releases align with Microsoft’s broader shift towards gaming services and subscriptions. However, exclusives will likely continue to play an important role in Xbox’s future hardware releases.
