- Disney’s Imagineers have developed the Holotile, a 360-degree treadmill with gesture, remote, and physical controls.
- YouTuber Marques Brownlee first outside Disney to test the device, demonstrating its potential for interactive metaverse experiences.
- While still a prototype, the Holotile offers unparalleled movement capabilities, envisioning broad applications from entertainment to training.
Disney’s team of creative tech experts, known as Imagineers, has introduced a cutting-edge prototype that could redefine movement within the metaverse—the Holotile. This 360-degree treadmill, tested by popular YouTuber Marques Brownlee, showcases an advanced design and functionality that pushes the boundaries of virtual navigation and object manipulation.
Introducing the Holotile
The Holotile appears as a thick plastic mat composed of numerous small, spinning pieces. It’s designed to create a dynamically moving floor, which can move in any direction thanks to its array of tilted, spinning discs. This innovative setup allows users to walk freely in a virtual environment, making it distinct from any other 360-degree treadmills currently available, which are often limited in movement capabilities.
Marques Brownlee, an influential tech reviewer and 2022 Ultimate champion, was the first non-Disney employee to experience the Holotile. His trials included manipulating objects through gesture control—akin to the powers of Jedi Knights in “Star Wars”—which involved moving items on the Holotile by simply waving a hand above a designated line.
Diverse Testing Scenarios
Brownlee’s experience with the Holotile extended to different control setups. After demonstrating gesture-based interactions, he tested the device’s responsiveness to remote controls by navigating the platform with a PlayStation controller while seated. The final test involved Brownlee walking on the Holotile, where his movements were synced to a virtual representation within a Disney metaverse environment, specifically a digital model of the Magic Kingdom.
Beyond Entertainment: Practical Applications
While the Holotile is still in its prototype phase, its potential applications extend far beyond the realm of entertainment. Disney envisions this technology not only as a new way to explore virtual theme parks but also as a tool for more practical scenarios. The Holotile could significantly benefit first responders, law enforcement, and military training programs by simulating complex, variable environments. Additionally, educational and physical training applications are conceivable, where users could interact with dynamic educational content or engage in physical activities within a controlled metaverse.
