Bitcoin Security Consortium Forms – Here Is Why Wall Street Is Preparing for the Quantum Era

  • Nine major companies have pledged $15 million over three years to support Bitcoin security research and open-source development.
  • The newly formed Bitcoin Security Consortium includes BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and several other industry leaders.
  • A key focus will be preparing Bitcoin for future quantum computing risks while strengthening the network’s long-term security.

A coalition of leading financial institutions and cryptocurrency companies has launched the Bitcoin Security Consortium, committing a combined $15 million over the next three years to strengthen Bitcoin’s security and support open-source development.

The consortium brings together some of the biggest names in both traditional finance and digital assets, including BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Galaxy.

Rather than directing Bitcoin’s development, the group says its goal is to provide sustainable funding for researchers and developers working to protect the network as new technological challenges emerge.

Preparing Bitcoin for the Quantum Era

One of the consortium’s primary objectives is helping Bitcoin prepare for the eventual rise of quantum computing.

While quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections do not currently exist, developers believe planning years in advance is essential because deploying network-wide security upgrades across wallets, exchanges, miners, and users could take considerable time.

The consortium also plans to publish research tracking Bitcoin’s evolving security landscape for both investors and the broader public.

Funding Independent Research

Instead of creating a centralized funding pool, each consortium member will independently decide which developers, researchers, or organizations receive financial support.

The group emphasized that it will not control Bitcoin Core development, dictate protocol upgrades, or advocate for specific improvement proposals.

BlackRock’s Head of Digital Assets, Robert Mitchnick, said the initiative is intended to provide additional long-term support for the developers responsible for maintaining Bitcoin’s core software.

New Security Proposals Continue to Emerge

Developers are already exploring several approaches to strengthen Bitcoin against future quantum threats.

Among the proposals under discussion is BIP 360, which introduces a new transaction output format designed to reduce public key exposure. Researchers are also evaluating post-quantum signature algorithms and potential migration strategies for older Bitcoin addresses that could become more vulnerable over time.

According to research from CryptoQuant, approximately 6.9 million BTC could eventually face increased risk if sufficiently powerful quantum computers become a reality.

Long-Term Security Becomes a Growing Priority

The consortium’s launch follows Galaxy’s separate $5 million initiative announced this week to support quantum-resistant cryptography, wallet migration tools, and security audits. It remains unclear whether Galaxy’s commitment is included within the consortium’s broader $15 million pledge.

As institutional adoption of Bitcoin continues to grow, many industry participants view long-term security as increasingly important. Although practical quantum threats remain years away, the latest initiative reflects a growing consensus that preparing today will be critical to protecting the world’s largest cryptocurrency well into the future.
