BoFA Expects Fed to Hold Rates – Here Is Why Investors Are Watching This Week’s Decision

  • Bank of America expects the Federal Reserve to leave interest rates unchanged at its July meeting despite lingering inflation concerns.
  • The bank says a surprise rate hike would be unprecedented based on modern Fed history and could reshape market expectations.
  • Investors are closely watching the meeting as oil prices, inflation, and future rate projections remain key market drivers.

Bank of America believes the Federal Reserve is most likely to keep interest rates unchanged at its July policy meeting, although it cautions that the possibility of a surprise hike cannot be completely dismissed.

In a note to clients, strategist Mark Cabana said the bank’s base-case scenario is for the Fed to hold rates steady, with two officials expected to dissent in favor of higher rates. While financial markets have priced in a small chance of additional tightening, Bank of America argues that history strongly favors a pause.

The decision comes as investors continue weighing inflation trends, energy prices, and the outlook for U.S. economic growth.

History Favors a Fed Pause

According to Bank of America, the Federal Reserve has not surprised markets with an unexpected interest rate increase in decades.

The firm noted that since 1994, the Fed has never delivered a rate hike when futures markets had assigned less than a 60% probability to such a move.

Current market pricing reflects only a modest expectation of additional tightening, making a July hike historically unusual if it were to occur.

Inflation and Oil Prices Remain Key Risks

Although softer inflation data in June strengthened expectations for a policy pause, Bank of America says inflation risks have not disappeared.

The bank pointed to higher oil prices as one factor that could place renewed pressure on consumer prices over the coming months.

At the same time, easing geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran may reduce some upward pressure on crude oil, though the bank believes energy markets remain an important source of inflation uncertainty.

Markets Could React Sharply to a Surprise

Bank of America warned that an unexpected rate hike would likely force investors to quickly reassess expectations for future monetary policy.

The firm estimates that such a move could increase expectations for additional interest rate hikes in 2026 while strengthening the U.S. dollar and affecting Treasury markets.

According to Cabana, the reaction in longer-term bond yields would largely depend on how financial markets interpret the impact of higher rates on economic growth and investor risk appetite.

Investors Await the Fed’s Next Signal

With markets broadly expecting policymakers to leave rates unchanged, investors will be paying close attention to the Federal Reserve’s accompanying statement and comments from Chair Jerome Powell for clues about the path of future policy.

Even if rates remain on hold, updated guidance regarding inflation, employment, and economic conditions could influence expectations for the remainder of the year.

As uncertainty surrounding inflation and global economic conditions persists, this week’s Fed meeting is expected to remain one of the most closely watched events for both traditional financial markets and the cryptocurrency sector.
