Binance has announced it will airdrop BNB tokens to users in the Turkey earthquake region. The disaster has had a devastating impact on many people and communities. In response to the unfolding tragedy, Binance has taken this action in anticipation of similar catastrophic events where people in the affected areas may lose access to traditional banking at a time when extra funds are needed for essential supplies.
Airdrop of BNB Tokens to Affected Users
The identification of users will be based on proof-of-address (POA) in ten cities affected by the earthquake, including Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Diyarbakır, Adana, Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, Malatya, and Hatay. While the POA method has limitations and inaccuracies, Binance has acknowledged that it is currently the best method to determine a user’s location. The total donation is estimated to be around $5 million.
Cryptocurrency transfers are becoming an increasingly popular method of delivering financial aid to disaster victims. These transfers provide fast, low-cost, borderless, and transparent transactions, making them ideal for delivering assistance in times of crisis. Binance Charity has also launched a public donation address for anyone to donate to the Turkey Earthquake Relief fund. Donations will be accepted in BTC, ETH, BNB, BUSD, and XRP.
Binance founder and CEO Changpeng CZ Zhou stated, “The recent earthquakes in Turkey have devastatingly impacted many people and communities. We hope that our efforts will bring some relief to those affected. We are calling on our industry peers to come together again to offer support in these times of crisis.”
Previous Charitable Uses of Cryptocurrency
This is not the first time cryptocurrency has been used for charitable purposes. In recent years, several examples of cryptocurrencies have been used to provide aid during times of crisis. For instance, during the Ukrainian war, cryptocurrencies offered humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict.
One example was the BIT Hope campaign aimed to raise funds for Ukrainian war victims. The Bitcoin community supported the campaign and raised over $10,000 in cryptocurrency donations. This demonstrated the potential for cryptocurrencies to be used for charitable purposes and the willingness of the cryptocurrency community to support those in need.
Another example of cryptocurrencies being used for charitable purposes was the Dogecoin community’s efforts to raise funds for the Jamaican bobsled team, which could not attend the 2014 Winter Olympics due to a lack of funding. The Dogecoin community came together to raise over $30,000 in Dogecoin donations, which allowed the Jamaican bobsled team to attend the Winter Olympics and compete.
These examples demonstrate the power of cryptocurrencies and their potential to be used for good. They also highlight the willingness of the cryptocurrency community to come together and support those in need. Binance’s airdrop of BNB tokens to users in the Turkey earthquake region is another example of this. It is encouraging to see such a large and well-known company using its resources to help those affected by the disaster.
