• Twitter, now called X, will remove the blocking feature according to Elon Musk
• Musk says the blocking feature “makes no sense”, but users are concerned about protection from abuse
• Users will still be able to block people from directly messaging them, but not from viewing their posts

Twitter, now known as X, will be removing the ability for users to block other accounts, CEO Elon Musk announced. This change has sparked fears that it will enable harassment and abuse on the platform.

Blocking Feature Provides Protection

The blocking feature currently prevents a blocked account’s posts from appearing in the blocker’s timeline. It also stops the blocked account from messaging the blocker or viewing their posts.

Many see this as an essential tool to shut out toxic users and avoid harassment. Jack Dorsey, one of Twitter’s founders, disagreed with removing the block button, saying “Mute only.”

Muting May Not Be Enough

With blocking gone, users would have to rely on muting abusive accounts instead. However, muting simply stops notifications and would still allow muted accounts to view and reply to the muter’s posts.

Users argue this leaves them exposed to bullies and stalkers. Removing blocking could also violate app store rules requiring measures to filter harassment.

Musk Wants Open Platform

Elon Musk has said he wants Twitter to be an open platform with all voices heard. However, this removal of protections risks clashing with regulations on protecting users from online harms.

It’s unclear if blocked accounts will automatically unblock. Users can still make accounts private, restricting posts to approved followers only.

Wider Changes Since Musk Takeover

This change is the latest in a series since Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion last year. He has fired top executives, introduced paid verification, and made various product tweaks via his own account.

Critics say Musk’s ideas are haphazard and he fails to consider the harm they may cause. Without oversight and consultation, users may lose trust in the troubled platform.
