Tencent’s Gaming Dominance Slips

Tencent has long dominated China’s lucrative gaming industry, publishing massive hits like PUBG Battlegrounds and Honor of Kings. Gaming has comprised nearly a third of Tencent’s overall profits.

However, the Chinese gaming industry has cooled recently. Revenues dropped from $169 billion in 2018 to just $158 million in 2022, according to The Verdict.

At a recent corporate event, Tencent CEO Pony Ma acknowledged the company’s gaming business faced “significant challenges” over the past year. He admitted Tencent was losing ground to competitors releasing hot new titles.

Pivoting to Artificial Intelligence

In light of declining gaming revenue, Ma signaled Tencent will shift more resources to AI research and development.

While not currently an AI leader, Ma said Tencent is closing the gap with top firms. The company is betting heavily on Hunyuan, its ChatGPT competitor, to drive AI ambitions.

Tencent launched Hunyuan last September for enterprise use. The conversational AI quickly gained popularity alongside models from Alibaba and Baidu.

China aims to lead AI globally by 2030. But with OpenAI’s ChatGPT commanding the conversational AI space, and Nvidia leading in hardware, China’s goals look uncertain.

The Road Ahead

As gaming declines, Tencent is strategically pursuing AI to drive future revenue growth. But the company faces stiff competition from both domestic and international AI leaders.

Tencent’s success will depend on quickly building capabilities around Hunyuan and other AI technologies. With China’s tech industry maturing, Tencent must adapt its strategy to maintain dominance.
