Backed Finance has made significant strides by launching a tokenized version of BlackRock’s iShares bond ETF UCITS on the layer-2 network, Base. This move exemplifies the growing trend of tokenization, revolutionizing traditional assets.
Tokenization of BlackRock’s iShares bond ETF UCITS
The innovative tokenization protocol introduced by Backed Finance has successfully converted BlackRock’s iShares bond ETF UCITS, which comprises a blend of short-term U.S. Treasury bills. The tokenized version, identified by the ticker blBO1, opens up new possibilities in the digital asset realm.
Expanding Product Offering and Simplifying Processes
Backed co-founder Adam Levi has expressed enthusiasm about the future, stating, “We can tokenize anything held in a bank account and look forward to expanding our product offering.” By working with Backed for RWA tokenization, organizations can eliminate the need for traditional financial intermediaries and complex legal processes.
Base Network, a layer-2 network built on Optimism’s OP stack and incubated by Coinbase, played a pivotal role in this milestone. Backed Finance’s collaboration with Base Network began in February, primarily due to the network’s commitment to supporting builders and developers.
Real-World Assets (RWA) Integration
The addition of real-world assets (RWA) on the speedy blockchain network marks a significant development. The tokenization movement has gained prominence in the decentralized finance space, with protocols like Aave and Maker exploring RWAs to generate revenue. Maker, for instance, has already integrated U.S. treasuries to generate yield on its stablecoin, DAI.
Adam Levi emphasized that fixed-income products, particularly non-USD denominated short-term bonds, are currently in high demand. Backed Finance remains open to tokenizing any requested security, such as Google or Tesla, once market interest becomes evident.
Regulatory Hurdles and Accessibility
While Backed Finance continues to innovate, it is important to note that, at present, U.S. investors are intentionally restricted from participating in trading Backed’s tokenized offerings. However, as the market evolves, there may be opportunities for American investors to access these digital assets.
