- Formerly known as .bit, Web3 identity protocol rebrands to d.id.
- d.id aims to strengthen the Decentralized Identity (DID) ecosystem, offering solutions for community building and enhancing digital identity.
- The rebranding reflects a commitment to accessibility and making Web3 user-friendly while promoting the importance of authentic digital identities.
Popular Web3 identity protocol, formerly known as .bit and established by ex-Tencent colleagues, has rebranded to d.id. With this move, the team has released a new website and an updated product matrix.
The transition represents the brand’s increased commitment to building a robust Decentralized Identity (DID) ecosystem. The new d.id Team intends to encourage community growth and enhance digital identity building by leveraging the possibilities of DID.
Starting out as .bit, the company rose to prominence by offering DIDs, which let users replace complicated alphanumeric crypto wallet addresses with easily recognizable names while maintaining complete control over their digital identity. Approximately 280,000 .bit domain names have been registered thus far, and over 140 popular wallets and dApps have merged with .bit.
With DID’s goal evolving, the team’s adventure now requires a new chapter: enter d.id
The new brand is based on three key themes: the relationship between communities and individuals, the essence of community governance and collaboration, and the preservation of individual uniqueness in the face of rapid AI advancement.
The team envisions a new paradigm for DID based on three tenets: Consider an environment where each identity begins with a unique decentralized name and is supplemented by a person’s “Soul-bound Tokens,” reflecting their diverse experiences and achievements. These factors, when combined, establish a person’s distinct digital identity inside the decentralized world, much like our real-world names and accomplishments do.
To make this vision a reality, the d.id team introduces “DID as a Service,” a suite of DID-based solutions designed to foster community building and improve digital identification. Communities can issue their DIDs, branded with a distinctive suffix, using .bit.
SoulFrag is the first DID-based reputation management system, guaranteeing that the contributions of all community members are recognized and respected. Voty, the first DID-based community governance system, promises a transparent and equitable governance experience. Individual users can utilize the d.id Profile to exhibit their experiences and accomplishments.
The switch to d.id highlights the brand’s steadfast commitment to making Web3 accessible to all. The team introduced the “Barrier–Free Web3” idea, a pledge to users, and an industry call to action.
All d.id offerings are seedless and gasless while decentralized and accessible to Web3 newcomers. This initiative attempts to make Web3 interaction as simple as possible for everyone.
Tim Yeoh, Founder of d.id, stated, “d.id represents more than just Web3 solutions; it signifies a paradigm shift. As our world becomes ever more interconnected, a robust and authentic digital identity is not merely a feature – it’s essential, a key to active participation in our global communities. We see DID as a shared resource, benefiting one and all. We are thrilled to partner with diverse communities, helping them in unlocking new possibilities with DID-based solutions.”
The company, founded in 2021, has been a DID pioneer. CMB International, HashKey Capital, QingSong Fund, GSR Ventures, GGV Capital, SNZ, SevenX Ventures, and Xin Fund Management led a $13 million Series A fundraising round in August.
As d.id advances into the future, the team is committed to investigating and fostering the DID domain. d.id will continue to innovate due to this rebranding, aiming to reshape communities and individual identities worldwide positively.
