XRP Ledger Passes 1 Million AI Payments – Here Is Why Ripple Expects Massive Growth Ahead

  • RippleX says agentic transactions on the XRP Ledger have surpassed 1 million, with expectations of reaching 10 million and eventually 100 million.
  • AI agents are increasingly using blockchain to make automated payments for APIs, data, and digital services without human intervention.
  • Ripple believes XRP Ledger’s fast settlement times and predictable fees make it well suited for the emerging AI economy.

RippleX believes the next wave of blockchain adoption could come not from people making payments, but from artificial intelligence.

According to RippleX Head of Engineering Ayo Akinyele, agentic transactions on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) have already surpassed 1 million, and the pace of development suggests that number could grow dramatically over the next few years.

As AI-powered software becomes more capable of completing tasks independently, developers are increasingly building systems that allow these agents to pay for the resources they need automatically using blockchain technology.

AI Agents Are Driving a New Payment Model

Agentic payments are transactions initiated by AI agents rather than humans.

Instead of waiting for manual approval, AI software can automatically purchase APIs, computing power, datasets, or other digital services needed to complete assigned tasks.

Ripple believes this type of programmable, around-the-clock payment system is a natural fit for blockchain networks, particularly those optimized for fast and inexpensive transactions.

XRP Ledger Targets Speed and Low Costs

According to Akinyele, one of XRP Ledger’s biggest advantages is its ability to settle transactions in roughly three to five seconds while maintaining predictable network fees.

Those characteristics make the network attractive for AI applications that may execute thousands or even millions of small transactions without requiring traditional banking infrastructure.

Ripple expects continued improvements to the network’s infrastructure to support a rapid increase in agentic payment activity.

Ripple Helps Shape the AI Payment Standard

Ripple recently joined the x402 Foundation as a premier member alongside companies including Coinbase, Circle, AWS, Google, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa.

Originally developed by Coinbase, the x402 protocol is designed to allow AI agents and applications to automatically pay for APIs and online services.

Ripple says its involvement gives the company an opportunity to help shape both the governance and technical standards that could underpin the emerging AI-powered payment ecosystem.

Real-World Commerce Is the Next Step

Most AI-driven transactions on XRP Ledger currently involve payments for APIs, software, and digital data.

However, Ripple-backed infrastructure company t54 says it is already working with ecosystem partners to onboard real-world merchants, allowing AI agents to purchase physical goods and services directly through XRPL.

If adoption continues accelerating, Ripple believes agentic transactions could grow from today’s 1 million to 10 million, and potentially 100 million, as AI agents become increasingly active participants in the digital economy.
