  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has asked French officials for access to Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, who is a UAE citizen and was arrested in France over allegations that the messaging app was being used for illegal activities.
  • The UAE is closely following the case and has requested that France provide Durov with all necessary consular services urgently.
  • Russia has also demanded access to Durov, who was born in St. Petersburg and lived in Russia until 2013, while maintaining French citizenship as well.

Telegram CEO and founder Pavel Durov was arrested in France this past weekend over allegations that his messaging app has facilitated criminal activity. The arrest has sparked international attention, with both Russia and the United Arab Emirates requesting access to the detained tech mogul.

The United Arab Emirates Closely Monitoring the Situation

The UAE, where Telegram is based and Durov holds citizenship, said it is “closely following the case.” The nation’s Foreign Minister Afra Al Ahmeli stated that the UAE has asked France to urgently provide Durov with “all necessary consular services.”

Durov’s Arrest Centered on Telegram’s Use in Crime

Durov was apprehended at Le Bourget airport near Paris. French authorities allege that Telegram has enabled illegal activities like drug trafficking and child abuse. They claim Durov has refused to aid their investigations by allowing wiretaps on the platform.

Russia Also Seeking Access to Durov

In addition to the UAE, Russia has demanded access to the Telegram founder. Durov was born in St. Petersburg and lived in Russia until 2013, though he has since relocated to Dubai. The Russian government previously attempted to ban Telegram in 2018.

Widespread Support for Durov After Arrest

Despite the allegations, Durov has received an outpouring of support from the crypto community. Justin Sun, founder of TRON, pledged $1 million to a DAO committed to helping free the Telegram CEO. Durov’s arrest caused Telegram’s token Toncoin to drop 17% in price.

Conclusion

The controversial arrest of Telegram’s founder on allegations of enabling crime has prompted both the UAE and Russia to seek access to Durov. Telegram boasts 900 million users worldwide, making Durov’s detention an internationally significant event at the intersection of technology and law enforcement. The case continues unfolding amidst vociferous support for the CEO across the crypto sphere.
