- Solana’s price underperformed in 2025 despite leading Layer 1 networks in usage and speed
- A renewed memecoin rally is driving capital back onto Solana’s launchpads
- The gap between Solana’s fundamentals and valuation may narrow as 2026 progresses
As 2026 gets underway, traders are already looking back at what 2025 actually delivered. It was a volatile year by any measure, but beneath the noise, some clear divergences quietly formed. Solana stands out here, maybe more than most.
Despite strong on-chain performance, SOL closed 2025 as the worst-performing major asset, down roughly 34.16%. Price lagged badly, yet the network itself kept firing on nearly every measurable front. That disconnect between fundamentals and valuation is now becoming harder to ignore.
Solana’s On-Chain Strength Never Went Away
From a technical perspective, Solana dominated Layer 1 activity throughout 2025. Average transactions per second came in around 1,100 TPS, a figure no other major L1 came close to matching. Year over year, that marked a 34% increase from 2024, reinforcing the idea that usage wasn’t slowing down.
The gap becomes even clearer when compared to competitors. Binance Smart Chain, the next closest network, averaged roughly 130 TPS. That’s nearly a 160% difference in throughput, yet BNB still finished the year up 24%, significantly outperforming SOL on price alone. The imbalance feels uncomfortable, and markets rarely leave those unresolved forever.

Memecoins Are Back, and Solana Is Right in the Middle
One early theme of 2026 is the return of memecoin risk appetite. Less than a week into the new year, total memecoin market cap jumped close to 30%, signaling that speculative capital is flowing again. With Solana hosting many of the cycle’s largest meme projects, that capital didn’t hesitate.
BONK posted a 58% weekly gain, but the bigger story sits with launchpad activity. Combined volumes reached a three-month high of $228 million, with LetsBonk.fun accounting for nearly three-quarters of that flow. It’s not just hype, there’s real transactional demand coming through the network.

Why Solana’s TPS Advantage Matters This Cycle
Solana now represents roughly 15% of the total memecoin market cap, and its two largest launchpads alone recorded about $220 million in trading volume. That’s nearly all memecoin activity happening directly on Solana, not bridged in from elsewhere. Speed matters when speculation heats up, and Solana keeps proving it can handle bursts of demand without falling over.
This isn’t a random spike. Solana’s dominance in throughput carried through all of 2025, and the memecoin resurgence is simply stress-testing what was already there. If price has lagged fundamentals so far, this divergence could become one of the more important narratives to watch as 2026 unfolds.
