- Zuckerberg tried Apple’s new Vision Pro headset and believes Meta’s Quest 3 is better overall, citing its lower price, comfort, display quality, and open app ecosystem.
- Zuckerberg acknowledged Vision Pro has higher resolution and eye tracking capabilities, but still prefers Quest 3 as the superior mixed reality product currently.
- This continues Zuckerberg’s pattern of downplaying the threat of Apple’s entry into VR/AR and promoting Meta’s offerings like Quest 3 over competing headsets.
Mark Zuckerberg recently tried out Apple’s new Vision Pro headset and compared it to Meta’s Quest 3. In an Instagram video, the Meta CEO claimed that Quest 3 is the “better product, period” over Vision Pro.
Zuckerberg Highlights Quest 3’s Lower Price, Comfort and Display
In the video, Zuckerberg said he expected Quest 3 would be the better value since it costs much less than Vision Pro. But after trying both, he believes Quest 3 is better overall, not just on price.
Zuckerberg said Quest 3 is more comfortable to wear, citing its lighter weight compared to Vision Pro. He also found Quest 3’s display to be brighter, crisper and have a wider field of view.
Quest 3’s Open App Ecosystem Seen as Long-Term Edge
Another advantage Zuckerberg highlighted was Meta’s open app approach versus Apple’s closed ecosystem. He said Vision Pro lacking native Netflix and YouTube apps demonstrates the limitations of Apple’s model.
Zuckerberg wants Meta’s “open model” to win out over Apple’s “closed model” like in past generations of computing. He believes this gives Quest 3 an edge for mixed reality’s future.
Apple’s Vision Pro Offers Higher Resolution and Eye Tracking
Zuckerberg did acknowledge Apple’s technical achievements with Vision Pro. He said it offers higher resolution, despite tradeoffs in comfort and display quality.
Vision Pro also has “really nice” eye-tracking capabilities that Zuckerberg said Meta will add back to future Quest headsets. But for now, he believes Quest 3 is the superior mixed reality product.
Zuckerberg Previously Downplayed Threat of Apple’s Entry into VR/AR
This isn’t the first time Zuckerberg has compared Meta’s offerings favorably over Apple’s. When Vision Pro was announced last year, he said it didn’t have “magical solutions” Meta hadn’t explored already.
With Meta investing billions into VR/AR, Zuckerberg has incentive to promote Quest 3 over new competing headsets like Vision Pro. But only time will tell which company’s vision for mixed reality prevails.
