Otherside Avatars Explained: How NFTs Become Playable Characters on ApeChain

  • Otherside NFTs function as fully playable 3D avatars across MSquared worlds
  • Supported ApeChain collections integrate avatar utility directly into the NFT
  • Free Default avatars lower the entry barrier for new users

If you’ve spent any time around the Otherside ecosystem lately, you’ve probably noticed something subtle but important happening. NFTs are no longer just profile pictures or collectibles. In Otherside, they’ve become functional, playable avatars that move with you across worlds.

At a technical level, an Otherside avatar is still an NFT you own in your wallet. What makes it different is what that NFT points to. Each supported avatar NFT includes metadata that links to a fully rigged 3D model stored off-chain, usually as a GLB file with textures and an accompanying MML descriptor. When you connect your wallet inside Otherside or its companion platforms, the game client reads your NFT, pulls in that 3D model, and renders it live in the environment.

From a user perspective, this part is refreshingly simple. You connect your wallet, pick an eligible NFT, and that NFT becomes your character in Otherside and other MSquared-compatible experiences. There’s no separate “avatar mint” step. If you own the NFT and the collection is whitelisted, you’re good to go.

Projects Already Live as Otherside Avatars

Beyond Yuga’s own collections like BAYC, MAYC, and Koda, a growing group of ApeChain projects have already shipped fully playable avatars.

Planet XOLO is one of the bigger examples. The collection consists of 20,000 ApeChain villagers, each with a 3D avatar that can be equipped directly in Otherside. FUKU followed a similar path, launching a smaller set of cyberpunk-styled apes with full avatar support. GeezOnApe, sometimes called “G’s on Ape,” brought 5,555 gorilla avatars on-chain, all playable in Otherside environments.

What’s consistent across these projects is that none of them issued a separate avatar token. The NFT itself is the avatar. You mint or buy the NFT, connect your wallet, and the avatar functionality comes along with it. So far, all of these collections were paid mints or secondary purchases. There were no free drops tied directly to these projects.

What Is OtherPage and Why It Matters

OtherPage plays a central role in tying all of this together. Think of it as the identity layer for the Yugaverse. It’s a Web3 profile and social platform where you connect your wallet, choose an avatar, and manage how you show up across connected worlds.

Once logged in, OtherPage detects supported NFTs in your wallet and lets you select one as your primary avatar. That same avatar then carries into Otherside and other MSquared-enabled experiences. On top of that, OtherPage adds social features like badges, activity rewards, and project-specific campaigns, all tied back to your avatar and wallet.

For newcomers, OtherPage also solves a big onboarding problem.

Free Avatars: The “Default” Option

Right now, the only widely available free Otherside avatars come from OtherPage itself. These are called Default avatars and include a male and female base character. Anyone can claim one simply by connecting a wallet on OtherPage and clicking the claim option.

Once claimed, the Default avatar is minted on ApeChain and functions exactly like any other Otherside-compatible avatar. You can equip it in Otherside, use it across MSquared worlds, and build your on-chain identity without owning an expensive PFP.

Outside of these Defaults, there are no confirmed free avatar drops tied directly to Otherside at this time. Some cross-chain avatar ideas have been discussed elsewhere, but nothing beyond the Default avatars is live or officially supported.

Minting and Markets on ApeChain

All of this runs on standard ApeChain NFT infrastructure. Projects typically launch through tools like Mintpad and trade on marketplaces such as Magic Eden, OpenSea, or Rarible under the ApeChain network. You won’t find a special “avatar marketplace” because the avatar utility is unlocked inside the metaverse apps, not at the point of sale.

In short, Otherside avatars mark a quiet but meaningful step forward. NFTs aren’t just something you look at anymore. They’re something you inhabit. And with free Defaults lowering the barrier to entry, that shift is now open to just about anyone willing to connect a wallet and step inside.
