The launch of the Milady Cult Coin (CULT) on Ethereum has finally arrived, though some were frustrated by the six-month delay. According to Charlotte Fang, founder of Remilia Corporation, the delay was intentional and part of a larger plan to set the stage for what the community considers more than just a cryptocurrency—a movement with philosophical underpinnings and a unique cultural identity.
Strategic Delay: Building a “Thousand-Year Empire”
The CULT token was announced months ago, but Fang explained the timing was deliberate.
“We waited for the right timing. You only get one chance to set the tone for a launch,” Fang told Decrypt. “Waiting some months doesn’t matter in the big scheme of things when you’re building a thousand-year empire.”
Remilia Corporation, best known for its Milady Maker NFT collection, is no stranger to edgy and enigmatic strategies. Its community thrives on deep insider jokes and cryptic references, creating an atmosphere that is both exclusive and unconventional.
CULT Launch and Initial Performance
In June, Remilia raised $20 million through a CULT token pre-sale. After its eventual launch, CULT reached a peak market cap of nearly $500 million before retracing by 50% within 48 hours, settling at approximately $250 million. Despite this drop, the token has become the 45th largest meme coin by market cap, according to CoinGecko.
This trajectory has drawn comparisons to other crypto projects like the Solana-based DEGOD token, which peaked at $326 million before plummeting 79% shortly after its launch.
A Community Like No Other
The Milady community is known for its layered humor, cryptic culture, and chaotic organizational style. For example, the CULT token airdrop required users to complete an IQ test, with the threat that failing would burn their allocation. While the test was impossible to fail, it added another layer to the community’s in-jokes, with members claiming they had “failed” anyway.
According to pseudonymous pre-sale participant Hieronymus, the delay in the token launch helped weed out individuals who didn’t align with the community’s mindset. “We are a group of extremely aligned individuals,” they said. “From the outside, it probably does look like a cult, and maybe we are.”
Unlike other crypto communities, Milady does not require members to hold specific NFTs or tokens. Instead, participation is defined by philosophical alignment with its unique values, often encapsulated by Fang’s concept of “Network Spirituality.”
The Philosophy Behind Milady
Fang describes Milady not as a cult in the traditional sense, but as a “memetic tribe” centered on shared ideas and self-organization. “Cult is borrowed as a cheeky euphemism,” Fang explained. “I don’t think we really are one, though we often are accused of it.”
This philosophy extends to various projects under Remilia’s umbrella, including Miladycraft—a custom Minecraft server that serves as both a virtual meeting place and a philosophical art piece. The server embodies the community’s ideals while fostering a space for creativity and collaboration.
Memecoin Chaos and CULT’s Future
The CULT token is just the beginning, with half its supply set aside for airdrops over the next two years through a “manipulation fund.” Early stunts, like awarding token allocations for drawing beetles and accumulating “beetle points,” further highlight the community’s penchant for chaos and cryptic humor.
Despite the apparent disarray, Fang sees CULT as redefining crypto culture. “Pure chaos, but in the chaos we form and forge ourselves,” a pseudonymous community member told Decrypt. “What comes out is something unstoppable.”
Imitations and Influence
As the CULT movement grows, Fang has noted that other projects are trying to mimic Milady’s success. “Now it’s become a trend for crypto coins to claim they’re also ‘cultcoins’ to try and have our aura rub off on them,” Fang said. “But it’s obviously just shallow marketing with none of the actual definitional qualities.”
Milady CULT Coin represents more than just a cryptocurrency launch; it is a convergence of art, philosophy, and culture that challenges traditional norms. As the project continues to evolve, its community’s unique ethos and unconventional approach set it apart in the crowded world of crypto.
