  • The CEO of Italian defense group Leonardo said he is more worried about the “stupidity” of AI users than the technology itself, as warnings grow about AI’s dangers.
  • He stated AI is a neutral tool made by humans, so the real issue is irresponsible use, not the tech. He urged focus on preventing stupid misuse over just AI concerns.
  • Though AI holds promise, risks include job losses and inequality. Defense firms like Leonardo must adapt to provide AI systems, a big tech challenge. Leonardo stock is up over 37% amid this transition.

The CEO of Italian defense group Leonardo said he is more worried about the “stupidity” of AI users than the technology itself. His comments come as warnings grow about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence.

The Leonardo CEO’s Stance

Roberto Cingolani, CEO of Leonardo, stated during an interview: “To be honest, what concerns me more is the lack of control from humans who are still making wars after 2000 years.”

He added: “With this in mind, artificial intelligence is a tool. It is an algorithm made by humans that is run by computers made by humans that controls machines made by humans. I am more afraid, more worried about national stupidity than artificial intelligence, to be honest.”

Cingolani emphasized: “I have a scientific background, so I definitely consider technology as neutral. The problem is the user, not the technology itself.”

The Promise and Perils of AI

AI advocates say the technology can benefit humanity in several ways, including fast-tracking patient diagnoses, modeling climate change, and fighting cyberattacks.

However, the International Monetary Fund warned that nearly 40% of jobs worldwide could be affected by the rise of AI. The IMF also cautioned that AI’s impact on the global labor market could worsen inequality in most cases.

The Tech Challenge for Defense

Cingolani stated that defense firms like Leonardo must digitize their platforms and provide AI-powered autonomous systems and services. He called this change “a big technology challenge.”

Leonardo’s Stock Performance

Shares of Leonardo rose over 4% around 8:48 am London time on Friday. The Milan-listed stock is up more than 37% year-to-date.

Conclusion

The Leonardo CEO urged focus on ensuring responsible use of AI over concerns about the technology itself. His comments highlight the promise and perils of artificial intelligence as its adoption accelerates globally.
