Ethereum Foundation Steps In to Support Roman Storm’s Appeal

  • Ethereum Foundation will match up to $500K in community donations to support Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm’s legal appeal.
  • Supporters argue the case could set a global precedent for developer rights, privacy, and open-source software.
  • Storm’s legal team faces mounting costs from expert fees and filings, with previous fundraising rounds already heavily utilized.

Supporters warn the case could set a precedent impacting software developers globally, while Storm’s legal team faces mounting costs from expert fees and filings.

The Ethereum Foundation has pledged to match community donations up to $500,000 to help Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm cover the costs of his legal appeal. Storm, recently convicted on one federal charge of operating an unlicensed money transmitter, still faces unresolved conspiracy charges that could add to his sentence if retried. His defence team is bracing for a lengthy and expensive process, with costs driven up by expert witness fees, legal research, and complex filings.

Why the Case Matters Beyond Tornado Cash

The @ethereumfndn will be matching up to another $500K in donations to the legal defense of Roman Storm.

Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Wei Wang framed the pledge as a stand for privacy rights and developer freedom, stating on X: “Privacy is normal, and writing code is not a crime.” Storm’s supporters, including the Free Pertsev & Storm group, warn that the case could set a global precedent affecting software developers everywhere. They argue Tornado Cash operated autonomously and couldn’t censor transactions, countering prosecutors’ claims that it knowingly enabled illicit use. The foundation has previously contributed $750,000, part of which came through earlier matching campaigns.

Legal Bills Keep Climbing

This is far from Storm’s first appeal for financial support. In July 2025, during his trial, he sought $1.5 million to keep the defence running, followed by another urgent $500,000 request on July 14 to cover a “critical shortfall” before proceedings began. His New York trial stretched over three weeks, consuming much of the previously raised funds. The Ethereum Foundation’s latest matching commitment comes as costs continue to mount, making community contributions essential for sustaining the appeal effort.
