Elon Musk’s X Faces Backlash Over DM System Removal

  • An X engineer casually hinted that direct messages might be removed soon, sparking major panic on the platform.
  • Users slammed the potential move, saying DMs are one of the main reasons they still use X.
  • With no official statement from X leadership, confusion and speculation continue to swirl.

Yeah, social media kind of exploded today—X (formerly Twitter) users are losing it after a casual comment from an engineer suggested that direct messages might be on the chopping block. No official announcement yet, but the reaction? Total chaos.

One Offhand Comment Sparked the Panic

It all started when X engineer Zach Warunek dropped a pretty cryptic (and honestly kind of smug) post saying, “If you aren’t the one actually writing/prompting the code, you are [not gonna miss it].” Weird vibe, right?

Then when someone flagged a bug in the message inbox, Warunek replied, “This page will be deleted soon so no.” A moment later, he followed that up by saying “the whole entire DM’s will be gone soon.” And yeah—that set the internet on fire.

Users Are Not Having It

Within minutes, the replies were filled with shock, anger, and more than a little sarcasm. People were like:

  • “Who the hell asked for this?”
  • “Might as well delete replies next.”
  • “DMs are literally why I even use this app.”

And that’s kind of the point. For a lot of users, DMs are essential—not just for chatting, but for networking, organizing, even reporting news. Removing them? Seems… kinda wild.

No Official Word—Just a Lot of Confusion

So far, there’s been nothing from Elon Musk or anyone higher up at X. That silence has only made the speculation worse. Was the engineer serious? Was it a joke? Or is it something they’re testing behind the scenes?

Whatever it is, folks are seriously on edge. With everything that’s already changed—paid checkmarks, weird algorithm shifts, ads in your replies—it’s not hard to believe they’d just flip the switch and kill off DMs too.

Guess we’ll see if this turns into another Musk-era feature purge or just another weird moment in X’s ongoing identity crisis.
