- CZ believes only a few altcoins with long-term potential will reach new all-time highs this cycle.
- Bitcoin’s price has soared thanks to institutional demand, while most altcoins lag behind.
- Early signs of ETF filings and treasury interest in altcoins like ETH and SOL suggest a possible shift.
While Bitcoin continues to crush past its previous all-time highs, most altcoins are still lagging behind, struggling to recapture their 2021 momentum. Binance founder CZ weighed in on the state of the altcoin market, warning that only “a small number of strong coins” are likely to see new all-time highs. He acknowledged that the era of broad altcoin gains, like in 2021, may be over for good. Notably, even top assets like ETH and ADA have yet to surpass their prior peaks in this cycle.
Altcoin Season Is Now a Rare Occurrence
Data shows that 2025 has seen barely a week of what qualifies as a true altcoin season, where most leading tokens outperform Bitcoin. This stands in stark contrast to 2021’s extended altcoin rallies. While some like SOL and BNB briefly exceeded their old highs during winter, they’ve since dropped below those levels. CZ remains cautiously optimistic but stressed that only tokens with real utility and growth potential will likely set new records.
Institutional Focus on Bitcoin — For Now
Bitcoin’s dominance this cycle has largely been driven by institutional demand, particularly from ETFs that have scooped up over $130 billion worth of BTC. Corporations are also holding Bitcoin as part of their treasury strategies. This has sidelined altcoins for the time being, but CZ noted that institutional attention could eventually spill over into other cryptos like ETH, SOL, and XRP.
Altcoin Revival Hinges on Institutional Support
Though altcoins are currently trailing, there are early signs of renewed interest. ETF applications are emerging for assets like Dogecoin, Solana, and Litecoin, while companies are beginning to consider ETH and SOL for their balance sheets. CZ believes that if history is any guide, Bitcoin’s strength will eventually lift quality altcoins too. Still, he warns many may never recover without strong fundamentals.
