  • Coinbase awarded $120,000 in Bitcoin to WNBA players during the Commissioner’s Cup Championship.
  • The partnership history includes Coinbase’s educational initiatives, like crypto courses for rookies and accounts for all WNBA players.
  • Fans benefit too, with crypto education opportunities, NFT collectibles, and exclusive discounts.

Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange platform, has taken its commitment to the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) to new heights. At the forefront of their collaboration, Coinbase awarded $120,000 worth of Bitcoin to WNBA players during the Commissioner’s Cup Championship. Each player received a substantial $5,000 in Bitcoin, directly deposited into their personal Coinbase accounts. Such a move not only signifies the strengthening ties between sports and cryptocurrency but also brings attention to the mutual benefits that both organizations see in their partnership.

This recent Bitcoin bonus is just a piece of the multifaceted relationship between Coinbase and the WNBA. The ties between the two organizations date back to Coinbase’s initiation as the WNBA and NBA’s first cryptocurrency sponsor in September 2021. From sponsoring teams like the Liberty and the Seattle Storm to individual deals with star players like Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd, Coinbase has been a staunch supporter.

It wasn’t just about sponsorship and promotions. Coinbase recognizes the need for education in the fast-paced crypto landscape. It showcased its commitment at this year’s WNBA rookie orientation, where it provided an introductory course on crypto and NFTs for every first-round pick. Taking this commitment a notch higher, the company has now decided to gift cryptocurrency to all 144 WNBA players, setting them up with Coinbase accounts. These players won’t be navigating the intricate crypto world alone – Coinbase ensures that they have ample access to crypto education through its panel of experts.

A Win-Win Situation for Coinbase, Players, and Fans

While Coinbase aims to spread the crypto word through one of the top basketball leagues in the world, the WNBA, in return, gets an opportunity to expose its players to the promising world of cryptocurrency. With influential players like Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd voicing their excitement about this partnership, it’s evident that both the WNBA and the crypto economy are at an exhilarating crossroads.

Bird, in her statement, mentioned the enthusiasm surrounding the WNBA and the crypto industry, highlighting the potential of introducing fans to Web3 experiences and NFT projects. Loyd, an early crypto investor herself, acknowledges the potential of decentralized banking, expressing her eagerness to partner with Coinbase to shape the future of cryptocurrency.

The fans aren’t left out in this collaboration. Both the Storm and Liberty enthusiasts will soon have opportunities to earn crypto assets through giveaways and real-life experiences. While the exact roles of Bird and Loyd remain under wraps, their involvement is poised to amplify participation in the crypto sphere. Not to forget, fans attending the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Championship were in for a treat with NFT collectibles from Coinbase. The icing on the cake was a 25% discount on the WNBA’s online store and a free single-game viewing pass for the WNBA League Pass streaming service.

The blossoming partnership between Coinbase and the WNBA is setting new benchmarks for how industries can come together, leveraging each other’s strengths. As the WNBA players embark on their crypto journey, equipped with knowledge and Coinbase accounts, the fusion of sports and cryptocurrency seems poised for a slam dunk!
