Balance Stablecoin Collapses 99% – Here Is Why an Oracle Exploit Wiped Out the Protocol

  • Balance Coin plunged more than 99% after an attacker exploited a pricing flaw in the protocol’s oracle system.
  • The exploit drained roughly $912,000 from 42DAO, the governance organization behind Balance Protocol.
  • The incident highlights the growing importance of secure oracle infrastructure as DeFi platforms continue handling billions in digital assets.

Balance Coin, an algorithmic stablecoin designed to maintain a $1 peg, suffered a catastrophic collapse after an attacker exploited a vulnerability in the protocol’s pricing mechanism.

The token fell from nearly $1 to approximately $0.0014 within hours, wiping out almost all of its roughly $3.5 million market value. While the token’s collapse was dramatic, blockchain data indicates the attacker ultimately extracted around $912,000 from the protocol.

The exploit adds to a growing list of decentralized finance (DeFi) attacks centered around manipulated price feeds and insufficient protocol safeguards.

Oracle Manipulation Triggered the Attack

According to blockchain security firm SlowMist, the attacker manipulated the protocol’s price oracle, causing it to report an artificially low Bitcoin price.

Balance Protocol allows users to deposit Bitcoin-backed collateral in exchange for newly minted stablecoins. If collateral values fall below required thresholds, those positions become eligible for liquidation.

Because the protocol accepted the manipulated price without verifying it against additional market data or implementing safety checks, the attacker was able to trigger liquidations that should never have occurred.

Missing Safety Measures Made the Exploit Possible

The manipulated price was reportedly accepted immediately by the lending contract without validating whether it fell within a reasonable range.

The protocol also lacked a liquidation delay that could have given the system time to reject abnormal pricing events.

As a result, the attacker rapidly liquidated multiple vaults, seized collateral, and exchanged the assets for profit before the protocol could respond.

The incident underscores why many DeFi projects increasingly rely on multiple oracle providers, price deviation limits, and time-delayed liquidations to reduce manipulation risks.

Stablecoin Risks Remain in Focus

Algorithmic stablecoins have faced heightened scrutiny since several high-profile failures over the past few years.

Unlike fully fiat-backed stablecoins, many algorithmic designs depend on collateral ratios, smart contracts, and market incentives to maintain their peg, making protocol security especially important.

Although Balance Coin was relatively small compared to the industry’s largest stablecoins, the exploit demonstrates how even low-circulation projects remain attractive targets for sophisticated attackers.

DeFi Security Continues to Face New Challenges

The Balance Protocol exploit arrives as decentralized finance platforms continue strengthening defenses against increasingly advanced attacks.

Security firms have repeatedly warned that oracle manipulation remains one of the most common vulnerabilities affecting lending and collateralized protocols, particularly when safeguards such as multiple price sources, validation checks, and delayed liquidations are absent.

As blockchain ecosystems continue evolving, developers are placing greater emphasis on rigorous smart contract audits and stronger security architecture to protect user funds and maintain confidence in decentralized financial applications.
