The world of sports, in particular, has found an intriguing intersection with blockchain technology through Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Among the latest contributors to this trend is FC Barcelona, one of the biggest names in global soccer.
FC Barcelona has embarked on an extraordinary initiative by teaming up with the NFT project, World of Women (WoW). Together, they have crafted a unique soccer NFT titled “Empowerment.” This animated digital masterpiece features an artistic portrait of Alexia Putellas, the captain of FC Barcelona’s women’s team and the 2022 UEFA Women’s Player of the Year. Yasmin De Cristofaro, a lead artist at WoW, meticulously created the artwork, drawing inspiration from Putellas’ image and infusing her unique style and vision into the design.
The NFT was set to launch for bidding from June 26 to June 28, 2023, on OpenSea, a popular NFT marketplace, with a starting bid of 0.1 ETH (roughly $350). As the market drives the final bid, the proceeds will benefit the Barça Foundation, a philanthropic entity supporting social projects for children and youth worldwide.
This collaboration between FC Barcelona and WoW isn’t a standalone effort. It’s part of the club’s Masterpiece NFT Collection, a series aimed at celebrating the club’s rich history and core values through the medium of digital art. The collection kicked off in June 2022 with its first NFT, “In A Way, Immortal,” commemorating Johan Cruyff, a legendary player and coach of FC Barcelona. Following the launch of “Empowerment,” future releases will feature other iconic moments and characters from FC Barcelona’s illustrious past.
Empowering Women in Sports through NFTs
This partnership goes beyond the club’s history; it’s also a platform for empowering female athletes and fostering diversity. The “Empowerment” NFT, created on Ethereum’s Polygon network, not only offers digital ownership but also physical perks. The owner will have the chance to meet Alexia Putellas in person, claim signed boots, and even receive a seat from Barcelona’s iconic Spotify Camp Nou stadium.
Shannon Snow, World of Women’s COO, highlighted the project’s commitment to promoting women’s representation in soccer. This unique collaboration serves to underscore the strength of women, confront challenges, and immortalize their legacy on the blockchain.
NFTs Bring a New Connection with Fans
The advent of soccer NFTs has introduced a fresh way for fans to connect with their favorite teams and players. It has opened new revenue streams and engagement opportunities for clubs and leagues, enhancing the relationship between fans and the sport. However, as with any new technology, it has its detractors. Critics argue that soccer NFTs are overhyped, unsustainable, and environmentally harmful. They also question the ownership and use rights of these digital assets. FC Barcelona’s NFT initiative proves that the potential for a wider appeal exists. It is a testament to the transformative power of sports and digital technology. More than just a digital asset, the “Empowerment” NFT serves as a symbol of progress, an immortalization of a remarkable sporting achievement, and a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
