- BitGo is migrating Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) from LayerZero to Chainlink’s CCIP, making WBTC the largest asset to adopt the interoperability protocol.
- The move follows the $292 million KelpDAO bridge exploit, which accelerated the industry’s focus on stronger cross-chain security.
- Nearly $15 billion in assets are now expected to migrate from LayerZero to Chainlink’s CCIP.
BitGo is migrating Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) to Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), marking one of the largest infrastructure shifts in the crypto industry as projects increasingly prioritize bridge security following several high-profile exploits.
The announcement makes WBTC, with a market capitalization of roughly $7.4 billion, the largest asset to transition away from LayerZero’s interoperability standard.

BitGo also confirmed that all future BitGo-issued assets will use Chainlink’s CCIP as their exclusive cross-chain solution.
Security Takes Center Stage
BitGo said the decision reflects its long-standing focus on security as it expands support for assets across multiple blockchains.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Belshe said Chainlink’s CCIP provides an institutionally trusted interoperability framework that aligns with the company’s standards for risk management, operational reliability, and security.
The migration follows growing concerns over bridge security after the $292 million KelpDAO exploit, where attackers exploited a weak LayerZero bridge configuration to forge cross-chain messages and drain user funds.
Nearly $15 Billion Is Moving to CCIP
WBTC joins a growing list of projects abandoning LayerZero in favor of Chainlink.
Other migrations include Kraken’s kBTC, SolvBTC, and xSolvBTC, bringing the total value expected to migrate to nearly $15 billion, according to Chainlink.
As the largest wrapped Bitcoin token, WBTC represents approximately 45% of the entire wrapped Bitcoin market, making its migration a significant milestone for Chainlink’s interoperability ecosystem.
Why Projects Are Choosing Chainlink
Both Chainlink CCIP and LayerZero enable assets to move across blockchains, but they rely on different security models.

Chainlink says CCIP bridges are secured by at least 16 independent, security-reviewed node operators, while also offering built-in safeguards such as transfer limits and configurable controls that can act as automated circuit breakers during suspicious activity.
Following the KelpDAO exploit, LayerZero also strengthened its security model by preventing the single-verifier bridge configurations that contributed to the attack.
WBTC Continues to Evolve
Wrapped Bitcoin has remained the dominant tokenized version of Bitcoin since launching in 2019, although it has faced criticism in recent years after BitGo partnered with BiT Global as part of a multi-jurisdiction custody arrangement.
That partnership contributed to Coinbase’s decision to delist WBTC and launch its competing cbBTC product, though BitGo continues to maintain ownership and control of WBTC’s smart contracts.
Despite Bitcoin’s price decline since late 2025 reducing WBTC’s market capitalization, its circulating supply has remained relatively stable, underscoring continued demand for tokenized Bitcoin across decentralized finance.
