Hut 8 Slips After Earnings – Here Is Why AI Expansion Could Still Drive Long-Term Growth

  • Hut 8 shares fell as much as 8% after second-quarter revenue came in slightly below Wall Street expectations.
  • The company reaffirmed its aggressive AI infrastructure strategy, highlighting an 8.7-gigawatt development pipeline and $26.6 billion in expected contract value.
  • Management also said future Bitcoin exposure will primarily shift to its majority-owned subsidiary, American Bitcoin.

Hut 8 shares moved lower Tuesday after the company reported second-quarter results that narrowly missed analyst expectations, even as executives highlighted continued momentum in their rapidly expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure business.

The Bitcoin miner turned AI infrastructure developer reported $74.9 million in revenue for the quarter, up from $41.3 million a year ago but below analysts’ expectations of roughly $80 million.

The company also posted a net loss of $177.1 million, largely driven by $138.6 million in unrealized losses on its digital asset holdings.

AI Infrastructure Remains the Main Growth Story

Despite the earnings miss, Hut 8 emphasized the continued expansion of its AI business.

The company said it has fully commercialized its 1-gigawatt Beacon Point AI campus and now manages an AI infrastructure portfolio totaling 949 megawatts of contracted capacity, representing approximately $26.6 billion in expected contract value.

Chief Executive Officer Asher Genoot also revealed that Hut 8’s broader development pipeline has expanded to approximately 8.7 gigawatts, up roughly 300 megawatts from the previous quarter.

Management Sees No Slowdown in AI Demand

During the earnings call, Genoot dismissed concerns that demand for AI infrastructure may be weakening.

According to the CEO, customer demand remains strong as companies continue searching for large-scale computing capacity to support artificial intelligence workloads.

Hut 8 is currently evaluating 11 exclusive development sites, each averaging more than 650 megawatts, while continuing construction at its River Bend and Beacon Point campuses.

The company also said financing plans for Beacon Point Phase 2 are progressing, with additional details expected in the coming weeks.

Bitcoin Strategy Shifts Toward American Bitcoin

Hut 8 also outlined a strategic change in how it manages its Bitcoin holdings.

Rather than keeping significant Bitcoin exposure on Hut 8’s balance sheet, management said future Bitcoin ownership will primarily reside within American Bitcoin, the company’s majority-owned subsidiary.

Genoot described Bitcoin as another treasury asset comparable to cash, suggesting the restructuring is intended to better separate Hut 8’s AI infrastructure business from its Bitcoin-focused operations.

What Investors Are Watching

While investors reacted negatively to the revenue miss, Hut 8 continues positioning itself as an AI infrastructure company alongside its Bitcoin mining operations.

The expanding development pipeline, multi-billion-dollar AI contracts, and continued investment in large-scale data centers remain key drivers that investors will likely monitor over the coming quarters as the company executes its long-term strategy.
