Galaxy Launches Bitcoin Quantum Initiative – Here Is Why Crypto Is Preparing for the Next Security Era

  • Galaxy has committed up to $5 million to help prepare Bitcoin for future threats posed by quantum computing.
  • The initiative will fund developers, researchers, and cryptography experts working on post-quantum security for Bitcoin.
  • Although quantum computers are not yet capable of breaking Bitcoin’s encryption, many in the industry believe preparations must begin now.

Galaxy is taking a proactive approach to one of Bitcoin’s longest-term security challenges by launching a new initiative focused on quantum computing preparedness.

The crypto financial services firm announced it will invest up to $5 million through its new Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, supporting research, developer grants, and collaboration between quantum computing experts and the Bitcoin community.

The move reflects growing industry efforts to ensure Bitcoin remains secure even as advances in quantum computing continue accelerating.

Why Quantum Computing Matters

Bitcoin currently relies on elliptic curve cryptography, a proven encryption system that secures wallets and transactions across the network.

While today’s quantum computers are nowhere near powerful enough to break Bitcoin’s cryptography, researchers believe future machines could eventually pose a threat if they become sufficiently advanced.

Recognizing that risk, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finalized its first post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024, while the U.S. government has established timelines for federal agencies to transition toward quantum-resistant security systems.

Galaxy Wants to Accelerate Bitcoin’s Preparation

According to Galaxy, Bitcoin’s decentralized governance means major protocol upgrades often require years of discussion, testing, and community consensus before deployment.

The company believes waiting until quantum computers become practical would leave too little time to safely migrate the network.

Through the initiative, Galaxy will fund work on quantum-resistant transaction proposals, post-quantum digital signature schemes, wallet migration tools, and independent security audits for proposed solutions.

Industry-Wide Collaboration Is Growing

The initiative also establishes a Quantum Advisory Council composed of leading experts in quantum computing and cryptography.

Beyond grant funding, Galaxy plans to publish ongoing research aimed at institutional investors, policymakers, and Bitcoin developers while encouraging other organizations to participate through co-funded research and open collaboration.

The company says narrowing the gap between the rapidly advancing quantum research community and Bitcoin’s developer ecosystem is essential for long-term network security.

Bitcoin Developers Are Planning Ahead

Galaxy’s announcement follows similar efforts across the broader cryptocurrency industry.

Earlier this year, Coinbase launched its own advisory council on quantum computing and blockchain security, while Strategy announced plans for a dedicated Bitcoin Security Program. At the protocol level, developers are also exploring quantum-resistant upgrades through proposals such as BIP-360 and BIP-361.

Although quantum computing does not present an immediate threat to Bitcoin, the consensus among many researchers is that preparing years in advance is the safest path. Galaxy’s latest initiative adds additional momentum to that effort, helping ensure Bitcoin’s security can evolve alongside advances in computing technology.
