Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has introduced a new experimental application that explores one of blockchain’s biggest challenges: enabling anonymous communication while maintaining accountable moderation.
The prototype, described by Buterin as a “vibe-coded” demonstration, is built on the Aztec Layer 2 network and implements a concept he first discussed in a 2022 blog post. The project’s source code has also been published on GitHub, allowing developers to study and build upon the design.

Although still an early-stage experiment, the demo offers a glimpse into how privacy-focused applications could evolve on Ethereum.
Anonymous Posting With Onchain Privacy
The message board allows users to deposit ETH on Ethereum’s main network before anonymously posting messages through Aztec.
According to the project’s design, posts do not expose the sender’s wallet address in public transaction data and cannot be directly linked back to the original deposit. Users can later withdraw their ETH back to Ethereum after using the service.
The system aims to provide strong privacy guarantees while remaining fully onchain.
Moderation Without Sacrificing Privacy
Unlike many anonymous platforms, Buterin’s prototype includes a built-in moderation mechanism.
A designated moderator can flag posts considered inappropriate, causing them to disappear from the default public feed. Rather than permanently banning users, flagged accounts receive a temporary posting delay before they can submit another message.
The project also incorporates an AI-powered moderation assistant, which reviews posts against moderation rules stored directly onchain and helps identify content that violates the platform’s policies.
Deposits Control Posting Frequency
The prototype introduces a deposit-based rate-limiting system designed to reduce spam.
Users who deposit larger amounts of ETH receive faster posting rates, while smaller deposits result in longer cooldown periods between messages. This mechanism discourages spam without requiring users to reveal their identities.

By combining economic incentives with privacy protections, the design attempts to balance open participation with responsible platform usage.
A Glimpse Into Ethereum’s Privacy Future
Buterin said the repository remains an early and incomplete proof of concept, with several features still under development, including browser support and additional security improvements.
Even so, the project demonstrates how Ethereum’s growing Layer 2 ecosystem can support applications that combine privacy, decentralization, and programmable governance.
As privacy technologies continue advancing, experiments like this could help shape future decentralized social platforms where users retain anonymity without eliminating mechanisms for community moderation and abuse prevention.
