  • Gemini plans on expanding its presence throughout the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
  • The U.S.-based crypto exchange is seeking to open its first office in India.
  • Pravjit Tiwana has been named CEO of Gemini Asia Pacific (APAC).

Gemini, the US-based cryptocurrency exchange and custodian founded by the Winklevoss twins, has announced that it will open a new engineering center in Gurgaon, India. In its April 20 blog post, the company highlighted that the move is part of its effort to accelerate the development of products and services used by millions of its customers worldwide. This move comes amidst a growing trend of US-based crypto exchanges entering the region in response to the increasing demand for cryptocurrencies in Asia.

According to the statement, in addition to its current operations in the US, the UK, Ireland, and Singapore, Gemini’s Gurgaon office will be the second-largest Gemini engineering hub after the US.

Actively Hiring

Gemini said that its operations, design, and engineering teams would contribute significantly to building new futurists for its crypto asset marketplaces and NFT, data pipelines and warehousing, next-generation web, mobile user experiences, payments, security, along with core platform fundamentals in the area of compliance.

The crypto exchange said:

“The products and features built-in to our India location will be used by our retail and institutional customers in 70+ countries.”

The company is actively hiring software engineers and technical product managers, human resources and talent acquisition, finance, support, and compliance, to work from its Gurgaon office.

In a statement, Gemini expressed its admiration for India’s tradition of engineering excellence and its view of India as a hotbed for bar-raising technology talent. The company is excited about this next step and is actively seeking out the best talent in the market to join its team.

CEO of Gemini Asia Pacific (APAC)

In a separate post, in line with this growth plan, Gemini has named Pravjit Tiwana as CEO of Gemini Asia Pacific (APAC). Tiwana will launch and expand the company’s products and services in the region, lead the go-to-market (GTM) organization (business development, marketing, and evangelism), and own PnL for the area. Tiwana, currently Gemini’s Global Chief Technology Officer (CTO), will continue to hold that role alongside his new responsibilities as APAC CEO.

The crypto exchange asserted that it has big plans for international growth in APAC this year. The company will be building product and engineering teams in India and expanding its business teams in India and Singapore to execute GTM strategies focused on growing its individual and institutional customer base in the region.

Gemini believes that crypto knows no boundaries, which is why it is a global company. The company’s expansion plans in APAC, particularly in India and Singapore, reflect its commitment to unlocking the next era of financial, creative, and personal freedom with crypto and Web3 innovation.

Many U.S.-based cryptocurrency platforms are concentrating on breaking into overseas markets as domestic regulators have turned against the sector. Gemini’s competitor, Coinbase, announced earlier this week that it had been granted a license to conduct business in Bermuda. According to a source familiar with the situation, Coinbase could start a futures exchange in the British Overseas Territory as early as next week.
