  • China gives out millions of its CBDC to citizens.
  • Each resident in Hangzhou received 80 yuan worth of CBDC over the New Year holidays.
  • e-CNY has recorded successful development since Chinese residents have used digital currency to pay for transactions in businesses.

Multiple Chinese cities welcomed residents into the Lunar New Year by giving them e-CNY—the country’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).

China has consistently enforced its CBDCs within its country since it was first introduced, ensuring that its citizens use them to perform daily transactions in the country’s commercial industry.

On February 6, an English-language media outlet—Global Times—in China, announced that several cities in the country launched digital yuan “activities” worth almost 200 million yuan to encourage consumption during the Spring New Year holidays.

According to Global Times, many local Chinese governments dispersed coupons in the digital yuan to improve consumption. This was done during the holidays after the country optimized its Covid-19 prevention regulations.

The cities reported giving out CBDCs worth 180 million yuan ($26.5 million). For example, Lianyungang in East China’s Jiangsu Province and Jinan in East China’s Shandong Province distributed digital yuan coupons during the holidays. At the same time, some local governments could use the digital yuan to support businesses to enhance recovery.

According to the outlet, a local government called Shenzhen in South China’s Guangdong Province distributed e-CNY worth 100 million yuan ($14.7 million) to subsidize its city’s catering industry.

Commercial institutions were also included as they were involved in digital yuan consumption promotions. However, their diverse activities included transportation, mobile communications, supermarkets, and tourism.

According to the data from Meituan—a Chinese e-commerce platform—the e-CNY allocated to the people of Hangzhou city for the Spring New Year holidays was quickly received by its residents in under nine seconds.

How is E-CNY Beneficial?

On February 1, a Chinese media outlet—China Daily—reported that the e-CNY has been helpful to the residents since receiving it, citing a woman who used the e-CNY to give her daughter what is known as a traditional monetary gift called a “red packet.”

According to China Daily, there are presently 17 Chinese provincial-level regions that have launched the digital yuan. During the New Year holidays, the e-CNY was primarily used in red packets as digital yuan was shared among residents across the country to “stimulate the consumer market.”

Hangzhou, one of the Chinese cities to adopt the e-CNY, distributed 4 million yuan worth of digital yuan to its people, with each person receiving 80 yuan.

China Builds its Wallet App

China launched a wallet app for its CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) a year ago. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) Governor Yi Gang promised to continue the country’s development of its CBDC as well as improve its design and uses.

China built its wallet app to incentivize its people to use the e-CNY and also enable the transfers of “hongbao” (red packets) during the holidays. This tactic was praised because it recorded effective results in the local governments which distributed the digital yuan to its residents.

Conclusion

China gave out 180 million yuan worth of CBDCs (central bank digital currency) to its citizens over the Spring New Year Festival holidays, which were received and used by the residents to stimulate the economy.
