Meta RPG Otherside is set to become the benchmark for blockchain gaming and the household name for GameFi, with the best security against hackers and rich incentives for players. However, it almost became a victim of what could have been another substantial digital heist since the Solana hack. On October 13, Othersidemeta, the official Twitter account of Otherside, tweeted a two-post thread about the account doing “some suspicious activity.”
According to the account, the hacker attempted to fool Otherside players into claiming mints and airdrops using a link provided. Fortunately, the attacker’s session was cut short, and the official team immediately managed to get a hold of the Twitter account.
“Voyagers, yesterday we became aware of some suspicious activity for this account; it was proactively locked shortly after we were alerted to the possible threat,” Othersidemeta tweeted. “We were able to secure the account today with the help of the Twitter team. We’re now back to business as usual.”
“Reminder – no surprise mints or airdrops. Always cross-reference our founders’ social accounts, our website, and other official communications before clicking on a link.”
As of press time, Otherside did not elaborate on finer details about the hacker’s malicious activities with the official account.
Premature Disaster
If the Otherside developers did not take immediate action, the hacker would have victimized several registered users and could have gotten away with millions of dollars. It seems like Yuga Labs, Otherside’s developer, took all the past incidents as lessons to ensure no more new breaches will happen.
In the mid months of this year, Yuga Labs’ Bored Ape Yacht Club had several cases of malicious breaches when hackers took hold of the official social media accounts, including Discord and Instagram, and gullied followers into clicking suspicious links. Supposedly provided direct passage for users to mints and airdrops. The links managed to phish unsuspecting people and steal their NFTs.
However, Yuga Labs prevented Otherside from turning into another BAYC disaster. The official Discord remains safe, although admins and moderators are taking extra precautions as of late before the hacker could attempt to seize the accounts and servers again.
Otherside in a Nutshell
Otherside is an “immersive, interactive, and collaborative” MMORPG set in the metaverse by Yuga Labs. It includes web3-based virtual worlds where players can own realms, create NFTs and explore rich lands to interact with the NPCs and other genuine players.
The economy runs on Apecoin, and Yuga Labs NFT holders get special bonuses when they bring their collections into the world. These include BAYC, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, Cryptoadz, Meebits, Nouns, Coolcats, CryptoPunks, World of Women, and Bored Ape Kennel Club.
It claims to have a “game-changing” technology with the Improbable M2 technology – where “metaverses are limited in their scale by how many communication operations or ‘ops’ per second they can process.”
Otherside was well-received during its launch, generating more than $561 million from the “Otherdeed” collection within 24 hours after release.
