Pump.fun, a decentralized platform for creating Solana-based memecoins, is under intense criticism after reports surfaced of users allegedly broadcasting violent and harmful acts during livestreams. Concerns have mounted over the platform’s ability to manage such content, with community members urging stricter moderation or a temporary shutdown of the feature.
On November 25, a user known as Beau, who works as a safety project manager for Pudgy Penguins, highlighted a troubling livestream on Pump.fun. In the broadcast, a user reportedly threatened suicide unless their token hit a specific market capitalization. Beau called for the platform to disable the livestream and provide assistance to the individual, labeling the feature as “out of control.”
Platform Moderation Under Fire
Other incidents include a user reportedly firing a gun out of a window as their token value rose and a child threatening family harm over coin performance. One individual even threatened violence against a school if their memecoin failed to reach its price target. These alarming incidents have led some members of the crypto community to refer to the livestreams as a “pipeline of felonies,” demanding immediate action to disable the feature until adequate safeguards are established.
In response, Alon, the pseudonymous leader of Pump.fun, defended the platform’s moderation system, claiming the team actively monitors content, including images, videos, and livestreams. Alon stated that a large team of moderators works around the clock to address violations, with additional support from engineers to manage the increasing scale of activity on the platform.
Despite these assurances, many community members remain unsatisfied, pressing for clearer communication and stronger preventative measures.
Growing Pressure for Reforms
While Pump.fun insists that moderation is a core focus, the platform has yet to detail any planned updates to its livestream feature or other safeguards. Critics argue that without substantial reforms, harmful activities may continue to proliferate, tarnishing the platform’s reputation and the broader decentralized ecosystem.
The situation has sparked a wider conversation about accountability and safety within decentralized platforms, particularly those involving user-generated content.
