- Mercedes-Benz unveiled new in-car features at CES 2024, including an emotional AI assistant that interacts in 4 modes and learns driver habits.
- The assistant uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT but could swap in other chatbots. Drivers can opt out of data sharing.
- Other updates include an NFT gallery app and music experience that alters songs based on real-time driving. Mercedes sees cars doing more than transportation.
The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas provides a glimpse into the future of technology. This year, Mercedes-Benz has generated buzz by unveiling updates to its in-car virtual assistant and entertainment systems.
An “Emotional” AI Assistant
Mercedes-Benz has enhanced its MBUX Virtual Assistant with the help of large language models (LLMs). The assistant can now interact in one of four “emotional” modes: natural, predictive, personal, or empathetic.
According to Markus Schäfer, Mercedes’ CTO, this technology allows vehicles to “know the driver like never before.” The assistant will learn drivers’ habits, like playing their favorite radio station or activating a massage on their morning commute.
While the assistant currently uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Mercedes could potentially swap in other chatbots down the line. The goal is providing the best experience for customers in different regions.
Drivers will be able to opt out of the program, with data not shared across users. The updated assistant rolls out in early 2025.
In-Car NFT Gallery
In addition to the AI assistant, Mercedes is revamping its in-car entertainment. This includes a new app called MBUX Collectibles for showcasing NFT collections on the dashboard display.
There’s also a new music experience called MBUX Sound Drive. Developed by artist William, it alters music based on real-time driving inputs.
Mercedes made headlines last year when an NFT drop crashed its website. The company has also used blockchain to track emissions in its supply chain.
While flashy, these features provide a peek into the potential future of driving. Mercedes is betting that vehicles will do far more than just get us from point A to point B.
