The FBI initially charged Sam Bankman-Fried in December 2022 with eight counts relating to fraud and financial crimes. One of these charges was committing finance campaign violations which refer to breaking the rules and regulations governing the funding and spending of political campaigns. This may involve accepting excessive contributions from individuals or organizations, failure to disclose campaign donations, or using campaign funds for personal expenses.
In a letter to Judge Lewis Kaplan, an attorney with the US Department of Justice outlined that the charge of committing finance campaign violations levied against SBF will be dismissed. SBF was charged with this for allegedly making unlawful campaign contributions.
On June 27, 2023, SBF filed a motion to have this charge dropped, which the court denied as they were waiting for clarification from the Bahamas regarding SBF’s extradition. The Bahamas notified the United States that it did not intend to extradite SBF on campaign contributions. In response, the US has decided that it will not proceed to trial on the finance campaign violation count.
